This day in history: Happy birthday, Natalie Portman!

Natalie was born in Jerusalem in 1981. She’s an Oscar-winning actress, activist, and philanthropist. She moved with her family to the United States in 1984 and settled in Long Island, New York.
At just 13, she made her very first debut as Matilda in the 1994 film Léon. And as she turned 16, she played one of her most famous roles, Padmé Amidala in Star Wars in 1999.
“The first time I saw that film was right after I was offered the role. I thought I should check up on it before I made my decision, and it was really great for me to see that something so fun and purely entertaining could attract so much love and devotion.” Natalie once said.
In 2005 Natalie won a Golden Globe for her role Alice in the film Closer. that was nearly a year after graduating from Harvard University with a degree in Psychology.
Natalie’s first time directing entirely alone was A Tale of Love and Darkness. Before that, in 2008, she directed a segment of the film New York, I Love You.
In 2010, she played Nina Sayers in Black Swan, one of her best roles. Transforming into Nina took a lot of time and effort. Natalie had to train around 8 hours a day, from ballet training to cross-training and swimming. She also had to lose about 20 pounds to capture the character in the best way possible. Natalie talked about the role during an interview with IndieLondon, “For this character, I went into that self-punishing mode and didn’t sleep and didn’t eat and worked out all day through injuries for three months, but sort of because I was living in that character. But on my own, I’m a pleasure seeker”.
For all the effort she’d spent, Nina Sayers brought Natalie her first Academy Award, with a Golden Globe, a BAFTA Award, a Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Award, and a Critics’ Choice Movie Award.
Besides winning Natalie her first Oscar, Nina Sayers was the reason Natalie met her husband, Benjamin Millepied. Benjamin was the film’s choreographer, and he performed as a dancer in the film. The two started going out in 2009 and got married in a private ceremony in 2012. The couple decided to get divorced after being married for 11 years. They have two kids, Aleph and Amalia.
When it comes to her own life, Natalie prefers privacy. She uses her social platform to talk about veganism and raise awareness on social and environmental issues. She is also known for supporting women’s rights. Natalie once said, “We need more representation of Asians on film, of Hispanics on film, of Blacks on film, and women and particularly women of color, Native Americans… And I hope that begins to change, because I think everyone is becoming more conscious of it, which hopefully will make change.”
She was one of the founding investors and co-founders of Angel City FC, a professional women’s soccer team based in Los Angeles.
