This day in history: Happy heavenly birthday, Princess Diana!

The People’s Princess, known for her compassion, warmth, and calm personality. Princess Diana, born in 1961, was the first wife of Prince Charles and the mother of Prince William and Prince Harry.

After her father inherited the title of Earl Spencer in 1975, Princess Diana became Lady Diana Spencer. Her friendship with Charles grew closer in 1980, a year later, they got married.

During her pregnancy with Harry, Diana and Charles’ relationship was getting better. Charles wanted the second child to be a girl, but when Diana learned it would be a boy, she kept it from him because she knew it would harm their harmony. According to Morton’s book, when Harry was born, Charles’ first words were “Oh God, it’s a boy.”

At that time, Diana struggled with severe postnatal depression, low self-esteem, eating disorders, and the stress of being constantly observed by the media.

Over the years, Diana’s struggles with depression increased, then by the early 1990s, everyone could clearly see how unhappy Diana and Charles were, even the media named them “The Glums.”

In 1992 British Prime Minister John Major announced Diana’s separation from Charles. Their divorce was finalized in 1996, and It’s said that Queen Elizabeth II was willing to let her keep the title, but Charles insisted she shouldn’t.

After the divorce, Diana devoted herself to her sons and charity efforts, supporting causes as diverse as the arts, children’s issues, and AIDS patients. She once said, “Nothing brings me more happiness than trying to help the most vulnerable people in society. It is a goal and an essential part of my life, a kind of destiny”.

Diana even brought her sons with her to hospitals, homeless shelters, and orphanages. To allow them to experience the world beyond royalty.

In 1997  Diana started dating Dodi Fayed. Members of the royal family and former Prime Minister Tony Blair didn’t like that, Blair even warned her he considered Dodi a problem.

That same year, on August 31, it was reported that Diana and Fayed, after trying to escape from members of the paparazzi, were killed in a car accident alongside their driver, Henri Paul.

Diana initially survived the crash but died from her injuries at a Paris hospital a few hours later. She was 36 years old.

Many people still talk about this accident. The official investigations mentioned that the accident was caused by a speeding, intoxicated driver trying to avoid paparazzi, though various conspiracy theories persist.
