This day in history: Happy birthday, Joni Mitchell!

Joni Mitchell, born Roberta Joan Anderson, is a Canadian-American singer-songwriter, painter, and one of the most influential voices in contemporary music

Born on November 7, 1943, in Alberta, Canada, Mitchell studied commercial art before moving to Toronto in 1964, where she started performing at local folk clubs and coffeehouses.

After a brief marriage to folk singer Chuck Mitchell, she moved to New York. Other singers first recorded some of her original songs, such as Urge for Going, Chelsea Morning, Both Sides, and The Circle Game. In 1967, she had her debut album, Song to a Seagull. The album was recorded at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, California, and produced by David Crosby.

Crosby wanted Mitchell to sound more natural, so he had her sing into the studio grand piano and set up extra microphones to capture her voice. Unfortunately, the setup captured too much ambient noise, which could only be removed post-production, giving the album a flat feel.

In 1971, she released her album Blue, which is often considered one of her greatest albums. It was rated the 30th best album ever made in Rolling Stone‘s 2003 list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, and it was chosen in 2000 by The New York Times as one of the 25 albums that represented “turning points and pinnacles in 20th-century popular music.

After that, Mitchell began exploring more jazz-influenced ideas and released Court and Spark, which became her best-selling album.

“I wrote my first real song in August, 1964. And my second one, called What Will He Give Me? in November of 1964. I didn’t write anything until the following April, when I wrote a song called Here Today And Gone Tomorrow. And about three or four more, I had one called The Student Song. I guess I had written about five songs when I met Chuck, that was in May of 1965,” Mitchell said

In the mid-’70s, she began working with noted jazz musicians including Jaco Pastorius, Tom Scott, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny, and Charles Mingus, who asked her to collaborate on his final recording.

She later turned to pop and electronic music and shifted back toward pop-infused textures, experimented with electronic music, and incorporated social and political commentary into her work.

“My music is not designed to grab instantly. It’s designed to wear for a lifetime, to hold up like a fine cloth,” she once said.

From the beginning of her career, she had illustrated her own album covers; then in the ‘80s she began to work more in visual arts, while also creating music such as Night Ride Home, Turbulent Indigo, Dreamland and Songs of a Prairie Girl.

After surviving a severe brain aneurysm and stroke in 2015, she made a great return to live performances. In 2022, Mitchell went on her first full-length concert in 22 years at the Newport Folk Festival. The live album Joni Mitchell at Newport won a Grammy for best folk album in 2024.

On October 13, 2026, at the age of 82, Mitchell officially became a U.S. citizen. “A journey that began 62 years ago,” she wrote on social media, sharing a photo of herself holding an American flag.
