Destiny’s Child is an American singing-rapping female group with Beyoncé Knowles, Kelly Rowland, and Michelle Williams, who, through their songs, became a symbol of empowerment for women worldwide.
On August 31, 2005, the World Music Awards honored the group as the best-selling female group of all time, having sold more than 50 million records globally, with four No. 1 hits and 10 top-10 songs in the Billboard Hot 100.
Destiny’s Child came together in the early ‘90s, originally named Girl’s Tyme, and had six members: Beyoncé and Rowland, as well as LaTavia Roberson, Támar Davis, and Nikki and Nina Taylor.
The group started on the Star Search television talent show, but it lost the competition. Beyoncé’s father, Matthew Knowles, decided to manage the group, and the first thing he did was remove Davis and the Taylor sisters and add LeToya Luckett.
The group signed a recording contract under the name Destiny with the Elektra label but was dropped before an album was released.
After that, the group changed its name again, this time to Destiny’s Child. Soon after, they signed a Columbia recording contract and then made their debut album.
Their albums with Columbia Records earned them two Grammy Awards and sold more than eight million copies in the United States.
Problems began to fracture the group; Luckett and Roberson quit two years ago after complaints about Matthew’s management.
Luckett and Roberson said that Matthew refused to share financial information with them and their parents, and replaced them in the group without informing them, and that they found out they were no longer in Destiny’s Child when they saw the video for the group’s hit single “Say My Name” with their replacements lip-syncing to the song. Roberson and Luckett sued Beyoncé and Rowland, but the case was later dropped after they reached a settlement.
In 2001 Destiny’s Child returned to the studio and released Survivor, which reached number one on the Billboard 200 chart.
A year later, the group won a Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance.
Destiny’s Child reunited for Destiny Fulfilled, working on creating a more balanced work, and giving the chance to each member of the group to contribute to the songwriting and production process, as Beyoncé had written most of the group’s earlier material. A year after their comeback, Destiny’s Child was recognized in 2005 as the world’s best-selling female group of all time at the World Music Awards ceremony.
“We had no idea that The Writing’s on the Wall would be as big a record as it was. Especially worldwide … at that time that we’d talk to people at the record company and they’d say, ‘Look, they don’t even play R&B in Europe right now.’ ” Beyoncé said.
The same year, the group announced their disbandment in an official statement.
“We have been working together as Destiny’s Child since we were 9, and touring together since we were 14. After a lot of discussion and some deep soul searching, we realized that our current tour has given us the opportunity to leave Destiny’s Child on a high note, united in our friendship and filled with an overwhelming gratitude for our music, our fans, and each other.” The statement read.
