This day in history: Bob Marley dies

On May 11, 1981, Bob Marley, the international face of reggae, passed away at the age of 36.

The roots of Marley’s illness that led to his death can be traced back to 1977. At the time, Marley noticed a wound on the big toe of his right foot that he believed was an injury from a soccer game. However, when the wound failed to heal, he sought medical advice. Doctors discovered acral lentiginous melanoma, a rare and aggressive form of skin cancer.

Unlike most skin cancers, this specific type is not linked to sun exposure, instead, it develops on the palms of the hands, soles of the feet, or under the nails. At the time of his diagnosis, doctors recommended amputating the toe to prevent the cancer from spreading.

Marley refused the amputation. His decision was rooted in his deeply held Rastafarian beliefs, which view the body as a temple and generally prohibit the removal of any part of it. Instead of amputation, Marley opted for a less invasive procedure where doctors removed the nail bed and some surrounding tissue, replacing it with a skin graft from his thigh.

For a few years, it seemed as though Marley had survived the illness. He continued to tour the world, recording iconic albums like Exodus, Kaya, and Uprising. His music became a global symbol of peace and resistance, particularly through events like the 1978 One Love Peace Concert in Jamaica.

By 1980, Marley was at the height of his fame, but his health was getting worse. In September 1980, he performed two shows at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

However, just days later, while jogging in Central Park, Marley collapsed. Medical exams revealed that the cancer from his toe had spread to his brain, lungs, and liver. A doctor at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center said that he had rarely seen so much cancer in a living person. Despite the diagnosis, Marley performed one final concert in Pittsburgh on September 23, 1980, before canceling the remainder of his tour to seek treatment.

Marley spent the next eight months fighting for his life. He traveled to Germany to receive alternative treatments from Dr. Josef Issels, but his condition continued to worsen. Realizing the end was near, Marley wished to return to his home in Jamaica to spend his final days.

During the flight from Germany, his vital signs dropped dangerously low, forcing an emergency landing in Miami, Florida. He was rushed to Cedars of Lebanon Hospital, where he died on the morning of May 11, 1981.

Bob Marley was given a state funeral in Jamaica, attended by hundreds of thousands of people. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994
