Happy Monday!

1. Family donates 650 acres to become a public state park in Texas
The Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation has paid more than $10 million for a 650-acre ranch at Lake Palestine, and it’ll become a state park.
“Families will be able to enjoy lake recreation on Lake Palestine, along with the pecan trees that are a signature of the property. We are grateful to our partners, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation, and to owner Sam Pollard and his family who have generously allowed this special slice of the Pineywoods to be accessible for generations of Texans,” said Rodney Franklin, director of Texas State Parks at TPWD.
The Pollard family had owned the ranch as their pecan farm since 1940. The land also includes pine forests, ponds, a seven-acre lake, and Lake Palestine frontage.
“This land is part of my soul,” said Sam Pollard, president of Texas Pecan Nursery. “It means a lot to me that we can leave a legacy for people to enjoy.”

2. South Dakota neighbors rescue a wounded owl tangled up in barbed wire
In Spearfish, South Dakota, Sharon and Scott Jacobs were driving past private land when Scott saw an owl stuck on a barbed wire fence.
The couple got a bag to put over the owl’s head to keep it calm, but they needed gloves to hold it; while they looked for gloves, another driver stopped to check if everything was OK. Scott explained and asked the driver, Brandon, if he had any gloves, and he did.
As the three started to remove the bird from the fence, the landowner’s daughter arrived and called her father, who agreed to cut the wire so they could free the bird.
Sharon called her veterinarian, who also agreed to come and check that the bird could fly again.

3. Community raises $18,000 to reunite owner with her dog of 11 years
After a divorce that made her lose her home and face financial difficulties, Lisa Wilson faced an impossible choice: she had to put Eddie, her dog of eleven years, in a local shelter, the Mitchell County Animal Rescue.
She kept visiting him and taking him for walks, but she was heartbroken. The shelter director stepped in and shared their story. People were touched by the story, and the shelter raised about $18,000 in donations for housing and moving costs, helping Lisa and Eddie reunite.

4. Feral shelter cats given new purpose in Barn Protection program
The Burbank Animal Shelter expanded its Barn Cat Program, rehoming unsocialized and feral cats who were otherwise at risk of euthanasia.
These cats are not suited for indoor living or human companionship. But through the shelter’s program, they can still find a place to live with purpose and protection.
Local farmers began adopting the cats as natural pest controllers, giving hundreds of cats a safe place to stay.
Each cat is spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and delivered by VBAS volunteers to a working home.

5. Monkeys rescued from illegal trade now live in a Mississippi sanctuary
Two military veterans, April Stewart and her husband, have built a sanctuary on a 15-acre property in rural Mississippi, where rescued monkeys are being taken care of and given another chance to live a better life.
The Gulf Coast Primate Sanctuary now provides a permanent home for 22 rescued primates, including spider monkeys, squirrel monkeys, and kinkajous.
“We’re not here to judge people. Our main goal is to help the monkeys. If there’s any monkey owners out there who maybe have some questions, we’re always open to conversation,” Stewart said.

6. 17-year-old runs Chicago marathon after spinal cord injury
After completing a marathon following a spinal cord injury less than a year ago, 17-year-old Wyatt Anderson finished the Bank of America Chicago Marathon on Sunday in 3 hours, 56 minutes and 28 seconds.
Anderson suffered a spinal cord injury while playing basketball last year, leaving him paralyzed from the neck down.
“I hope my story will help other people want to set a lofty goal for themselves and to believe that nothing’s impossible,” Anderson said.
