One of the worst days in the history of America: September 11. A series of attacks by the terrorist organization al-Qaeda against the United States in the country’s busiest city on a busy workday.
The attacks were planned by Osama bin Laden, the leader of the terrorist group al-Qaeda. Two planes, hijacked by al-Qaeda terrorists, crashed into both towers at the World Trade Center leaving a burning hole near the 80th floor of the 110-story skyscraper, and taking the lives of nearly 3,000 innocent people.
17 minutes after the first plane crashed into the tower, a second plane hit the south tower near the 60th floor, causing a massive explosion.
And while everyone was still trying to understand what’d happened, a third plane crashed into the Pentagon then a fourth was on its way to Washington, D.C., but passengers and crew were able to stop that from happening, and the plane crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, sadly, all 40 passengers with the crew died.
This day was the deadliest since the attack at Pearl Harbor 60 years earlier. Amongst the 3,000 innocent people were 441 first responders, making it the greatest loss of emergency responders on a single day.
One of the survivors, Brian Clark, said, “The lights above me flickered and I spun around in my chair and my peripheral vision caught flames against the window. It was surreal. Two or three seconds later, the flames dissipated and the airspace was filled with singed paper.”
On that day after the attacks, President George W. Bush said, “Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America. These acts shatter steel, but they cannot dent the steel of American resolve.”
May 1, 2011, President Barack Obama announced the death of Osama bin Laden in a U.S. military operation in Pakistan, saying, “Justice has been done.” In response to the attacks, the United States launched the Global War on Terror, seeking to eliminate these groups and their leaders.
