An American singer-songwriter and actress, Beyoncé rose to fame in the late ‘90s as the lead singer of Destiny’s Child. She later established a solo career with her debut album Dangerously in Love.
Her parents, especially her father, were the first to support Destiny’s Child. “If Beyoncé came to me and said, ‘Dad, I wanna be a doctor,’ I would find a way of buying a hospital.” Mathew, her father, said.
He even quit his corporate job to become his daughter’s manager, and took a music business class at Houston Community College.
“We had no idea that The Writing’s on the Wall would be as big a record as it was. Especially worldwide … at that time that we’d talk to people at the record company and they’d say, ‘Look, they don’t even play R&B in Europe right now,” Beyoncé said.
In June 2005, the group announced they would disband. The next year, Beyoncé released her second solo studio album, B’Day.
In 2008, she married Jay-Z. Later that same year, Beyoncé released the double album I Am…Sasha Fierce. After this album, Beyoncé released 4, Beyoncé, Lemonade, RENAISSANCE, and Cowboy Carter.
Beyoncé’s talents weren’t only shown in music; she made her acting debut in Carmen: A Hip Hopera, which aired on MTV in 2001, then in other movies, including Austin Powers in Goldmember and Dreamgirls.
In 2008, she founded her own company, Parkwood Entertainment. ”When I decided to manage myself it was important that I didn’t go to some big management company. ” she said.
Beyoncé is active in humanitarian efforts. She cofounded the Survivor Foundation, which provided transitional housing to people displaced by Hurricane Katrina, and the Knowles-Rowland Center for Youth, a community outreach center in Houston.
“I’ve worked long and hard to be able to get to a place where I can choose to surround myself with what fulfills and inspires me,” Beyoncé said.
