This day in history: Nicole Brown Simpson & Ron Goldman murdered, sparking OJ trial

With fatal stab wounds, both Nicole Brown Simpson, famous football player O.J. Simpson’s ex-wife, and Ron Goldman were found murdered on the night of June 12, 1994, outside Nicole’s home in Brentwood, California.

All the evidence pointed to O.J. Simpson, including a record of domestic violence he previously sent to Brown. After being notified of charges, he first agreed to turn himself in, but then, 5 days after the murder, he decided to escape hiding in the back of his friend’s A.C. Cowlings white Ford Bronco.

The attempt to escape failed as Simpson’s car was spotted that afternoon and police managed to reach him. He refused to surrender and threatened to kill himself. After that, a chase that was televised started through the streets of Los Angeles, around 95 million watched while the police were chasing Simpson until he gave himself up at his home in Brentwood.

An eight-month trial of O.J. Simpson began on January 24, 1995, in a Los Angeles courtroom with many pieces of evidence against Simpson. His blood was found at the murder scene, one of his gloves was also found in Brown’s home, the other outside his own house, these with some other clues that his defense lawyers or what was called “Dream Team” claimed it doesn’t really belong to him.

His lawyers’ claim was mainly based on that the evidence had been mishandled and that many members of the Los Angeles police department were racist, especially Mark Fuhrman, a detective who found the glove at Simpson’s home. The argument was that the glove was too small to be Simpson’s, as he tried it on in the courtroom. The defense also claimed that other evidence had been put by the police to frame Simpson as guilty.

On October 3 1995 Simpson was found not guilty of the murders.Until February 1997, when, in a civil trial brought by victims’ families, Simpson was found responsible for the crime, and was ordered to pay a total of $33.5 million, little of which he has paid.

Simpson ran into legal problems many times after this incident, he was arrested for robbery and kidnapping, and sentenced to 33 years in prison. Simpson died of cancer on April 11, 2024.
