This day in history: Happy birthday, Angelina Jolie!

The happiest of birthdays to Angelina Jolie!

American actress and director Jolie made her very first world debut in 1975 in LA, to parents John Voight and Marcheline Bertrand. She began acting early, at age 7, alongside her dad in the movie “Lookin’ to Get Out.” She’d also follow in her mother’s footsteps and attend the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute.

By 1997, Jolie won her first Golden Globe and an Emmy nomination for “George Wallace.” A year later, she’d taken home another Golden Globe for “Gia.”

Still, the actress may be best remembered for portraying Lara Croft, a role that would fail to add to her impressive list of awards. Yet it was this role that Jolie credits for starting her impressive humanitarian work since it introduced her to several Cambodian refugees while filming “Tomb Raider.” In 2002, she would even adopt her first son, Maddox, from the country.

“Without Cambodia, I may never have become a mother. Part of my heart is and will always be in this country. And part of this country is always with me: Maddox,” she once said.

The actress, whose former husbands include actors Jonny Lee Miller, Billy Bob Thornton and Brad Pitt, has six kids: Maddox, Zahara, Pax, Shiloh, Knox and Vivienne. She adopted Zahara from Ethiopia and Pax from Vietnam. Twins Know and Vivienne as well as Shiloh are her biological kids with Brad Pitt.

In 2011, Jolie created the Jolie Legal Fellowship, which helps vulnerable children worldwide find international lawyers and human rights attorneys. A year later, she would be named a Special Envoy, after previously being named the Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in 2001.

In 2013, Jolie underwent a preventive double mastectomy after testing positive for a rare BRCA1 gene mutation. The surgery reduced her cancer risk from 87% to 5%.

These days, Jolie has shied away from the limelight to live a more private life. She’s also got plans to relocate abroad to places such as Cambodia and Europe.
