This day in history: Happy heavenly birthday, Bob Hope!

Comedian, actor, singer & dancer, born Leslie Townes Hope on May 29, 1903, in England, Bob Hope moved to the United States with his family when he was just four years old. He grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, where he showed his love for comedy at age 10 by winning a Charlie Chaplin imitation contest.

Bob Hope was a man of many talents. He worked hard in his youth, even trying boxing, before starting his long career in show business. He began by performing in vaudeville and later made it to the Broadway stage.

By the late 1930s, his fast-talking style made him a huge star on the radio, leading to the creation of the very popular The Bob Hope Show in 1938. That same year, Hope made his first movie appearance in The Big Broadcast of 1938. In this film, he sang “Thanks for the Memory,” which became his famous signature song.

In the 1940s, he starred in seven “Road to…” comedy films alongside Bing Crosby and Dorothy Lamour. Released between 1940 and 1962, these classic movies are famous for their music, self-referential jokes, and fast-talking camaraderie.

Bob Hope is also remembered for his deep dedication to American soldiers. During World War II, he started traveling to military bases to perform for troops overseas and at home. He continued these USO tours for decades, entertaining soldiers during the wars in Korea, Vietnam, and the Persian Gulf.

Hope performed his very first USO radio show on May 6, 1941, at March Field in Riverside, California. In 1997, Congress declared Bob Hope the first honorary veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces. The USO also established the Spirit of Hope Award in his honor.

Hope received many prestigious awards. These included the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Congressional Gold Medal, and five special Academy Awards for his movie work and humanitarian efforts.

Bob Hope passed away on July 27, 2003, but his incredible legacy lives on. Happy heavenly birthday, Bob Hope!
