The difference between a monthly mortgage of $1,200 and one of $3,500 is not a lifestyle preference. It is a financial reality that shapes everything about retirement.

The rankings come from U.S. News, which analyzed 859 cities for its 2026 Best Places to Retire report based on median gross rent and annual housing costs.

Here are ten cities where the numbers work.

Fort Wayne, Indiana

Average rent $1,017, median mortgage $1,212. Chicago, Detroit, and Columbus are each within a day’s drive. The Allen County Public Library houses one of the largest genealogy centers in the country. U.S. News ranks Fort Wayne number 10 overall, where affordability and quality of life align rather than trade off.

Huntsville, Alabama

Average rent $1,237, mortgage $1,501. Huntsville is anchored by NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center and a constellation of aerospace companies, giving it healthcare infrastructure that rivals much larger cities. Monte Sano State Park offers trails and scenic overlooks within city limits.

Green Bay, Wisconsin

Average rent $1,017, mortgage $1,212. Green Bay ranks 16th overall on the Best Places to Retire list, and its revitalized downtown and football culture give it an energy that smaller, affordable cities often lack.

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

Average rent $1,116, mortgage $1,537. The city ranks 29th for healthcare quality among major US cities. The National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum anchors its cultural scene, and Oklahoma City Community College waives fees for seniors auditing courses.

Average rent $1,006, mortgage $1,385. One of the Quad Cities on the Mississippi River, Davenport ranks seventh among major cities for price parity on goods and services, meaning everyday costs are low relative to most of the country.
