Two and a half centuries after signing the Declaration of Independence, this year the United States will be celebrating its 250th birthday.
The Semiquincentennial will mark the launch of what President Trump called “the greatest political journey in human history.”
On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia. The document which Thomas Jefferson wrote inspired by the political philosophies of John Locke, was a direct response to years of tensions.
A resolution to separate from Britain was approved on July 2, but the final text was adopted on July 4. After voting on independence, “the Continental Congress needed to finalize a document explaining the move to the public,” the National Constitution Center writes.
This year, in addition to the regular parades and fireworks, a “Great American State Fair” was set up on the National Mall in Washington. To celebrate America’s 250th birthday, the U.S. government planned several special projects. Cities like Boston, Philadelphia, New York, and Charleston will be hosting the main events.

New York City and Harbor are currently hosting the monumental Sail4th 250 and an International Naval and Aerial Review to celebrate America’s 250th birthday. The event will have ships and military vessels along the Atlantic coast as part of the summer-long Sail250.
One of the celebrations will feature the world’s largest operating steam locomotive, which will make a 250th-anniversary journey from Scranton, Pennsylvania, to Cheyenne, Wyoming, with multiple stops along the way.
