Sylvester Stallone, an American actor, screenwriter, and director, famous for the title role in his own screenplay of Rocky.
Stallone was born at a charity hospital in New York. Forceps used during a complicated birth paralyzed the left side of his face, leaving him with a droopy left eyelid and partial paralysis of his lip, tongue, and chin
He spent much of his infancy in boarding care until he was five, then Stallone moved with his family to Maryland. Because of his history of school expulsions, he was expelled from fourteen schools by the age of thirteen, Stallone attended a private school for emotionally troubled youths.
Stallone’s very first screen appearance was an uncredited extra role as a restaurant diner in Downhill Racer in 1969. A year after he made his screen debut in an adult film, The Party at Kitty and Stud’s. After some other small roles, Stallone moved to Hollywood and got his first role in The Lords of Flatbush in 1974.
Inspired by the 1975 fight between Muhammad Ali and Chuck Wepner, Stallone wrote his first script, Rocky, and decided to keep the rights and play the film’s main character. Producers Irwin Winkler and Robert Chartoff accepted Stallone’s terms and picked up the screenplay. A year later, Rocky became a box office hit, earning ten Academy Award nominations.
“I wanted to write a movie about a guy who says ‘I’m not great at all, never will be. I fight great fighters. But I just want the opportunity to go the distance,’” Stallone said, talking about Rocky character.
His next success was Rambo. Stallone starred in and co-wrote all Rambo films, and directed the fourth installment, Rambo, 2008.
In addition to his film work, Stallone is an art collector and painter. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1984.
In 2023, a reality television series about Stallone, his wife Jennifer Flavin, and their three daughters premiered on Paramount+, showing details about the family and their daily lives.
Stallone is still active both on television and in film. Lately, Amazon MGM Studios has renewed its deal with Stallone’s Balboa Productions, on which Stallone commented, “Amazon has shown tremendous passion for where we can go next, especially as we approach the 50th anniversary of Rocky.”
