This day in history: Happy birthday, Susan Sarandon!

Susan Sarandon is an American film actress and political activist, born Susan Tomalin in 1946 in New York.

In 1967, she got married to Chris Sarandon after meeting as theater students. They divorced in 1979, but she kept Sarandon as her surname.

Sarandon started as a model and appeared in small film and TV roles. In 1975, she landed a part in The Rocky Horror Picture Show, then starred in The Great Waldo Pepper.

Sarandon gained more attention after her roles in two films directed by Louis Malle, Pretty Baby and Atlantic City.

For her performance in Atlantic City, she got her first Oscar nomination. With Tim Robbins, Sarandon had a relationship that lasted for several decades, and the couple became known as active promoters of leftist causes.

During the 1993 Academy Awards ceremony, when Sarandon and Robbins appeared as presenters, they spoke about the plight of Haitian HIV-positive refugees.

Sarandon joined antiwar activist Cindy Sheehan in 2006, in a fast against the war in Iraq, and received the Action Against Hunger Humanitarian Award. She was an outspoken supporter of Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders in 2016 before voting for Jill Stein of the Green Party. Her opinion brought an intense backlash, online abuse, and even personal attacks for refusing to support Clinton during the presidential election.

“I did think she was very, very dangerous. We would still be fracking, we would be at war if she was president. It wouldn’t be much smoother,”she once said.

Sarandon and American actress Hannah Einbinder were among people detained by police in New York on Sept. 24 during a demonstration organized by Jewish Voice for Peace to protest against Benjamin Netanyahu.

At the Venice Film Festival in September, Sarandon SAID that speaking out has affected her career.

“I’ve still had movies taken away recently because there are agencies that are telling people not to hire me still. But that’s the power structure. I think within the people, certainly internationally, I feel welcome,” she said.
