This day in history: Happy birthday, Keanu Reeves!

Happy birthday, Lebanese-born actor and musician Keanu Reeves. Although he has many popular roles, Reeves is perhaps most famous for his role in The Matrix.

Growing up, Reeves wanted to become a professional hockey player. However, a visit to Hollywood inspired his interest in acting, and he immediately enrolled in drama classes. 

His first acting role was during high school at De La Salle College in a production of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible. Reeves was accepted at the Toronto High School for the Performing Arts, but after a disagreement with a teacher, he was expelled and never finished high school. Instead, he continued his acting classes and began getting some acting jobs. 

In 1984, Reeves got his first theater role in Brad Fraser’s Wolfboy. After this role, he played in the Canadian television show Hangin’ In

That same year, Reeves moved to Los Angeles, where he got his feature film debut as a hockey goalie in Youngblood.

In 1988, Reeves appeared in two comedies, The Prince of Pennsylvania and Parenthood.

Throughout the ‘90s, Reeves appeared in several other films, including A Walk in the Clouds, Feeling Minnesota, and Chain ReactionAt that time, Reeves also started touring as a bass player with his band, Dogstar. 

In 1999, Reeves’s role as Neo in The Matrix was his most successful work at the time. The film earned tens of millions worldwide. 

“’The Matrix’ changed my life,” Reeves added, “ And so when you say these years, the amount of people who I’ve met who have… been touched by The Matrix in such a positive way, it’s the best”. 

Reeves also appeared as Neo in the sequels The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, both released in 2003.

 His band, Dogstar, performed for the last time around 2002, then officially broke up. 

In 2010, Reeves announced that he would be reprising his role as Ted for a third installment in the Bill and Ted series.

“We couldn’t be more excited to get the whole band back together again. Chris and Ed wrote an amazing script, and with Dean at the helm, we’ve got a dream team” The actor, director, and screenwriter Alex Winter, and Reeves said

During the pandemic in 2022, Reeves’s band Dogstar announced on their Instagram that they were back, and they had their first public performance together in over twenty years at the BottleRock Napa Valley Music Festival in May 2023. 

Away from the screen, Reeves is also a motorcycle enthusiast. With designer Gard Hollinger, the two formed Arch Motorcycle Company LLC in 2011.

In 2024, Reeves said, “I’m 59, so I’m thinking about death all the time. Hopefully it’s not crippling, but hopefully it’s sensitised us to an appreciation of the breath we have, and the relationships that we have the potential to have.”
