George Alan O’Dowd was raised in a working-class Irish Catholic family in Eltham. Boy George’s childhood was difficult with a lot of tensions between his parents, as his father was physically and mentally abusive to his mother.
“I went out of my way not to be like my dad, but turned out that I was the most like him of anyone… the gay version,” Boy George said.
Boy George is a singer, songwriter & DJ who gained fame with his group Culture Club during the 80s for his music and his flamboyant makeup and clothing.
His first two singles failed to chart but George was still happy some people enjoyed it. It wasn’t until the release of the third single, “Do You Really Want To Hurt Me“, that the group started getting famous. The song was number 1 in sixteen countries, and the second in the U.S. With their song being played regularly on American radio and the new MTV network.
This single was followed by other successful songs like “Time (Clock Of The Heart)” and “I’ll Tumble 4 Ya” making Culture Club the first group after the Beatles to have at least three top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 from a debut album.
After a while and some more hits, the group took home the Grammy for Best New Artist. George gave a speech to his U.S. fans saying, “Thanks America. You’ve got style and taste, and you know a good drag queen when you see one”.
His fame didn’t stop there, George’s looks inspired many Boy George look-alike contests. Teenagers and young adults gathered to compete for the best impression of the singer.
Boy George had a problem with drug addiction, and he was convicted of heroin possession which affected the band and led to its separation.
After the separation, Boy George was the lead singer for the group Jesus Loves You. He started getting famous as a DJ in the 1990s, and in 1995 he published the autobiography Take It like a Man. Culture Club reunited in 1998, releasing their album Greatest Moments, which included “I Just Wanna Be Loved”, the single reached number four on the U.K. charts.
At that time, Boy George had another problem with addiction and was sentenced to community service in New York City for falsely reporting a burglary in his apartment, where police found cocaine while searching his apartment for evidence.
In 2008 Boy George released “Yes We Can” inspired by Barack Obama. After that Boy George served several months in prison as he was convicted of falsely imprisoning a male escort, who claimed that Boy George beat him with a metal chain.
In 2017 Boy George partnered with the Young Men’s Christian Association Australia to release a cover version of the Village People’s “Y.M.C.A.” in a campaign to raise awareness about mental health, youth unemployment, and marriage equality. And in his 2024 memoir Karma: My Autobiography. Boy George wrote about his time in prison and his addiction. “I’m not an evil queen, just an idiot who did too many drugs and made a massive mistake”.
Boy George reunited with Culture Club members Mikey Craig and Roy Hay, and the band resumed touring around the world. He also competed in the Eurovision Song Contest 2026 as a guest performer with San Marino.
