The controversial (& very rich) Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling: A closer look

A Closer Look

J. K. Rowling was born Joanna Rowling on July 31, 1965, in Yate, Gloucestershire. A philanthropist, Rowling is the author of Harry Potter, a seven-volume fantasy novel series published from 1997 to 2007.

Rowling was working as a researcher and bilingual secretary for Amnesty International in 1990 when she created the concept for the Harry Potter series. The seven-year period that followed saw the demise of her mother, the birth of her initial child, divorce from her first husband, and relative poverty until the first novel in the series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, was published in 1997.

Six sequels followed, concluding with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, published in 2007.

Seven years later, Forbes named Rowling the world’s highest-paid author. Her book series has sold more than 600 million copies, has been translated into 84 languages, and has given birth to films, video games, and TV shows.

Rowling, who has had her share of controversy, also writes the continuing crime fiction series under the alias ‘Robert Galbraith.’
