All dogs are intelligent in their own way, but some breeds consistently stand out when it comes to learning, problem-solving, and working alongside humans.
Much of what we know about canine intelligence comes from research popularized by Stanley Coren, who evaluated breeds based on how quickly they learn commands and how reliably they obey them.
Of course, intelligence isn’t everything. A “smart” dog may require more training, stimulation, and attention. But if you’re looking for a highly trainable and responsive companion, these breeds are widely considered among the smartest.
How Dog Intelligence Is Measured
Experts generally look at three types of canine intelligence:
- Instinctive intelligence – what a dog was bred to do (herding, retrieving, guarding)
- Adaptive intelligence – how well a dog can solve problems independently
- Working & obedience intelligence – how quickly a dog learns commands from humans
This list focuses mostly on working and obedience intelligence, which is why you’ll see many working and herding breeds near the top.
20. Flat-Coated Retriever
Friendly and enthusiastic, Flat-Coated Retrievers are quick learners with a strong desire to please. They thrive with active owners and plenty of mental stimulation.
19. German Shorthaired Pointer
Highly versatile and athletic, these dogs excel in hunting, sports, and obedience. Their intelligence comes with high energy, so they need plenty of exercise.
18. Keeshond
Originally watchdogs on Dutch barges, Keeshonds are alert, people-focused, and quick to learn—especially when training stays positive and engaging.
17. Collie
Immortalized by Lassie, Collies are known for their intelligence, sensitivity, and strong herding instincts. They excel in obedience and family environments.
16. Belgian Sheepdog (Groenendael)
A hardworking herding breed, the Belgian Sheepdog is highly trainable and thrives when given tasks. They’re often used in service and protection roles.
15. Schipperke
Small but mighty, Schipperkes are clever, curious, and independent thinkers. They were originally bred for pest control and still have sharp instincts.
14. Belgian Tervuren
Closely related to other Belgian herding breeds, the Tervuren is intelligent, alert, and extremely trainable. They excel in working roles and dog sports.
13. English Springer Spaniel

10. Australian Cattle Dog
Also known as Blue Heelers, these dogs are incredibly intelligent and driven. They thrive on problem-solving and need constant mental engagement.
9. Rottweiler
Rottweilers combine strength with intelligence. With proper training, they’re confident, obedient, and highly capable working dogs.
8. Papillon
The smallest breed on this list, and one of the smartest. Papillons excel in agility and obedience and can learn complex tricks with ease.
7. Labrador Retriever
Friendly and eager to please, Labs are not just popular—they’re highly trainable. They dominate roles in service work, detection, and assistance.
6. Shetland Sheepdog
Often compared to miniature Collies, Shelties are fast learners with strong herding instincts. They excel in agility and obedience competitions.
5. Doberman Pinscher
Dobermans are known for their loyalty and sharp intelligence. They’re quick learners and excel in protection, obedience, and working roles.
4. Golden Retriever
Golden Retrievers combine intelligence with an exceptional temperament. They’re easy to train and widely used as service and therapy dogs.
3. German Shepherd
One of the most versatile breeds in the world, German Shepherds excel in police work, military roles, and service jobs thanks to their intelligence and discipline.
2. Poodle
Behind the fancy grooming is one of the smartest dogs in the world. All sizes, including standard, miniature, and toy, are highly trainable and excel in performance tasks.
1. Border Collie
Border Collies consistently rank as the most intelligent dog breed. They’re problem-solvers, fast learners, and thrive on complex tasks.
Famous examples like Chaser, who learned over 1,000 words, highlight just how advanced their learning ability can be.
