To seek refuge of the gloom grasp of winter, Europe has a number of destinations that are perfect for sun-seeking, winter-hating travelers. Here, we selected 15 destinations that offer pleasant weather, friendly locals, and an abundance of positive whatnots.

1. Madeira, Portugal

The Portuguese island dubbed “the outdoor Eden in miniature” by CNTraveler, might be the perfect spot for those looking for an adrenaline-fueled adventure on a sun-kissed island. 2. Málaga, Spain

Located on the coast of Andalusia, Málaga is a great destination to get your much-needed dose of vitamin D during winter while enjoying delicious Spanish cuisine and exploring historic sites. Just wandering through the city’s ancient streets and landmarks, such as the majestic Alcazaba, an 11th-century Moorish fortress will do the work. 3. Nice, France

January temperature range: 48°F–50°F 

Granted, you won’t be taking a dip in the Mediterranean Sea come January, but there’s far more to do in the waterfront city of the French Riviera. You can spend your days wandering through the narrow streets of the historic Old Town or walking up Castle Hill and enjoying the incredible views of the city. Did we mention there will be a lot of wine and cheese?

4. Sicily, Italy

January temperature range:  48°F–58°F

Opting for a winter getaway to Sicily, Italy’s southernmost island, beats facing the scorching heat of July any day. Plus, being a tourist favorite, Sicily can get unpleasantly packed during peak season. Well, not in winter. You can visit stunning historic spaces like the Temple of Concordia in Agrigento without hating everyone around you.

5. Crete, Greece

January temperature range: 54°F–59°F

Those who make the wise decision to visit Greece’s largest island during the off-season can ditch the Michelin man coat for a light jacket. Crete offers a peaceful escape from the usual tourist hustle. During winter, towns like Heraklion and Chania are stripped of the chaotic tourist shenanigans, and you get to experience them as the locals do. The island’s famed beaches, like the pink sands of Elafonisi, and historical treasures like the Palace of Knossos, are less crowded, offering a more personal encounter with their beauty.

6. Seville, Spain

January temperature range: 40°F–60°F 

Cold, gray winter seems to bypass this Andalusian sun-kissed city that oozes history, culture, and just beauty all around. As charming as it gets, Seville is a perfect winter escape with so many things to do and see. Have a stroll to the magnificent Plaza de España, where, if you are lucky, you can catch a flamenco show. Explore the narrow alleys in the city center while marveling at the Moorish architecture. 7. Algarve, Portugal

January temperature range: 46°F–59°F

The Algarve, a 200 km stretch of sun-kissed coast in southern Portugal, has been voted “Europe’s Leading Beach Destination” at the 2023 World Travel Awards for the tenth time. This accolade, however, should not confine this increasingly popular region to just the peak summer season. In fact, you might not be splashing in the Atlantic even at the height of July, as the waters can be nippy, but it’s perfect for relaxing and soaking in every shade of blue. Faro is the unofficial capital of the region, but for a more off-the-beaten-path experience, you can rent a car and explore fishing towns like Lagos and Sagres.

8. Malta

January temperature range:  57°F–60°F 

Malta has 300 days of sunshine a year, which should be enough reason to visit the tiny island. But the Mediterranean gem is also a culture-soaked hub, packed with rich history, delicious local and international cuisine and surrounded by design hotels and award-winning diving sites. Just a weekend in the ancient capital Valletta should be enough to fall for this piece of land finally getting the attention it deserves after being unfairly underrated for years.

If you’re chasing the sun this winter, Cyprus is just the right place to bask in warm, sunny days exploring the historic ruins and charming villages without the summer crowds. The island’s diverse landscape, from mountain trails to quiet beaches, becomes a peaceful haven.

10. Canary Islands, Spain

14. Marseille, France

The southern port city is the cheaper, sunnier, and far less bourgie alternative to Paris, Bordeaux and Lyon. Marseille, often preferred as the starting point for those looking to explore Cote D Azur is a perfect destination for escaping the gloom of winter. Portugal’s sun-blessed capital has become a go-to spot for tourists, expats, and digital nomads, especially during spring and summer. However, Lisbon’s laid-back vibe and sunny charm don’t fade in the winter – if anything, they’re enhanced.
