Elderly woman gets to thank hero who nabbed purse snatcher

Woman thanks hero

Sometimes you’re just in the right place at the right time.

That was the case for Deshawn Pressley when he was shopping at a suburban Cincinnati Kroger earlier this month.

According to reports, Pressley had been chatting in the grocery with 87-year-old Patricia Goins about his 1-year-old daughter. A few minutes later he heard Goins screaming for help from another aisle in the store. A purse snatcher had grabbed her purse.

Surveillance video from the store shows Pressley running after the thief, Derek Vaughn, 58, grabbing him in the parking lot, and subduing him with a few swift punches and kicks as police officers made their way to the scene.

You can watch Pressley take down the purse snatcher in this video:

The local sheriff honored Pressley for his quick thinking and action.

“In our country right now, things are kind of tough, and when somebody jumps in and helps somebody … you make us very proud,” Sheriff Richard K. Jones told Pressley in a news conference. “Not just here — everybody in the country — and we’re proud of you.”

Jones then presented Pressley with a framed commendation for his heroism.

“I just turned around and did what I had to do as a citizen and I’m glad I helped her because she’s a wonderful, lovely lady and I just love helping people, especially older women,” Pressley is quoted as saying in a WDPE News report.

Derek Vaughn

Vaughn’s case is scheduled to go before a grand jury. He is being held in Butler County Jail in lieu of $55,000 bond on felony charges of robbery and theft.
