This day in history: Happy birthday, Hugh Jackman!

Hugh Jackman is an Australian actor, singer, dancer, and producer, born in 1968.

After graduating with a degree in communications, Jackman decided to take acting classes, but he didn’t have enough money to pay, so he took on many small jobs. “After I graduated, I thought, Well, I’m going to give this everything I’ve got for five years. If nothing happens, I’ll start my own theater company or whatever…. I’m not going to spend my whole life waiting for the phone to ring,” he once said.

After finishing his acting studies in 1994, Jackman got a role in Correlli with Deborra-Lee Furness, who soon became his wife.

Jackman was becoming increasingly famous in Australia, and at the time he played different roles in many films, such as Paperback Heroes and Erskineville Kings.

His Hollywood debut came with X-Men, a role that stayed with him for nearly 25 years, from X-Men in July 2000 to Deadpool & Wolverine in 2024.

For Jackman, playing Wolverine was far from straightforward, as he was initially rejected after his first audition for the original 2000 X-Men movie.

Dougray Scott was the first choice for the role, but filming delays on Mission: Impossible II and an on-set accident forced him to withdraw, so the studio turned to Jackman as a replacement. When Jackman met producer Tom DeSanto, He was told his height might be an issue.

“We were talking, and he said, ‘You know, it’s just one problem. I hope the fans are not going to have a problem because the character is meant to be 5’5”.’ And I said, ‘Tom. Really, it’s going to be absolutely fine. Don’t worry about it, thank you.’ “ Jackman said.

In 2003, Jackman starred in The Boy from Oz, which showcased his talents as a dancer, singer, and storyteller. He also appeared in many films after, like Les Misérables, Logan, and the musical The Greatest Showman.

Away from the screen, Jackman is active in charity work. In April 2009, he donated $100,000 to Charity Water and Operation of Hope.

Jackman launched Laughing Man Coffee in 2011, inspired by a trip to Ethiopia. He wanted to provide premium coffee while giving back to the communities that produce it. 100 percent of his coffee profits go to the Laughing Man Foundation, which supports coffee farming communities.

Lately, Jackman starred in The Sheep Detectives and The Death of Robin Hood, and he’s now signed on to play Long John Silver in Ridley Scott’s upcoming adaptation of Treasure Island.
