Costco finds shoppers swear are worth making room for

The freezer space is already committed. The pantry has a shelf quietly reserved. And yet, on every Costco run, something new ends up in the cart and forces you to rethink your entire storage situation. It happens to almost everyone who shops there regularly. The warehouse format works on the logic that a genuinely good product, bought in volume, pays for the membership in two or three uses.

The items below come up repeatedly in conversations about what actually delivers on that logic. Not the obvious ones, not water or the enormous bags of paper towels; the ones that members bring up specifically when someone asks what is worth going out of the way for.

Olive oil

Rated among the highest quality olive oils available in the United States at any price point, the Kirkland organic extra virgin olive oil is produced in California and Italy and has passed purity testing that many branded competitors have not. Two liters for roughly what a single premium bottle costs elsewhere. Cooks who use olive oil daily consider this the most straightforward value in the building.

Cashmere sweaters

They show up seasonally, not year-round, which is part of why people talk about them. Cashmere sweater pricing in the general market has no consistent relationship to quality, and the Kirkland version, when in stock, offers fiber quality that most department-store options at three times the price don’t reliably match. Long-term members advise buying more than one when they appear, because the restock timeline is unpredictable.

Hearing aids

Sold in the hearing aid section and priced at a fraction of what audiologist-dispensed devices cost, the Kirkland Signature hearing aids are built by the same manufacturers that produce branded devices sold elsewhere for several thousand dollars more per pair. Consumer Reports confirmed that Costco ranked second-best overall among hearing aid retailers in their survey of more than 13,000 members. For anyone managing hearing loss who has been surprised by the cost of traditional hearing aid channels, this is the item most likely to justify an immediate membership.

The rotisserie chicken that has not changed price since 2009

Held at $4.99 since 2009 as a deliberate loss leader that drives store traffic, the Costco rotisserie chicken generates over 100 million units in annual sales and has become its own category of consumer loyalty. The chicken itself is a legitimate 3-pound bird. The price is what it is, and Costco has confirmed they have no plans to change it. Members who shop primarily for this and leave have been identified as a genuine demographic. No judgment.

Batteries

Consumer Reports designated Kirkland Signature alkaline batteries a Best Buy, placing them in the same performance tier as Energizer and Duracell at roughly half the per-unit cost. They are manufactured by Duracell. The packaging is different. The cells are not.

The bottom line

The membership pays for itself differently for different households. For some it is the olive oil. For others it is the hearing aids. The rotation of seasonal items means the case for going changes throughout the year, which is somewhat by design. The warehouse experience is not for everyone. But for the items above, the case for driving to one is easy to make.
