Creator of A Song of Ice and Fire, fantasy writer George R. R. Martin, was born in 1948 in New Jersey.
Martin had an interest in science fiction and fantasy literature since childhood; he sold his first short story in 1971. For his military service, Martin received conscientious objector status during the Vietnam War, so he volunteered for an organization in Chicago while organizing chess tournaments and doing what he loved: writing short fiction.
In 1974, he won a Hugo Award for his novella “A Song for Lya;” then, two years later, he started teaching journalism at Clarke College in Dubuque, Iowa.
Martin’s first full-length fiction, in 1977, was Dying of the Light; after that, he moved to work as a full-time writer in New Mexico. During the ‘80s, Martin wrote several screenplays for the show The Twilight Zone; then he started writing for the TV series Beauty and the Beast.
In 1996, Martin published A Game of Thrones, which later started his A Song of Ice and Fire fantasy series. By the fourth volume, 2005’s A Feast for Crows, Martin found his work at the top of the bestseller list. With the HBO TV adaptation Game of Thrones, the books gained even more popularity,
Then in 2011, Martin published the fifth title in the series, A Dance with Dragons, which became a best-selling novel.
Although Game of Thrones on HBO was over in 2019, it still wasn’t over for Martin, who worked on The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring.
In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Martin said he had completed about 1,100 manuscript pages of The Winds of Winter, and that leaving the series unfinished would feel like “a total failure”.
“I do think if I can just get some of these other things off my back, I could finish The Winds of Winter pretty soon … It’s been made clear to me that Winds is the priority, but … I don’t know. Sometimes I’m not in the mood for that.”
