An American film director known for his bold and exciting way of approaching sensitive, controversial topics, Spike Lee who typically writes, directs, and produces his own films.
In 1986, Lee released his very first feature-length movie, She’s Gotta Have It, when he was only 29 years old. Spike Lee talked about the challenges of making a successful independent film, he said, “It wasn’t fun to make it, but it was very fun to write it. … Because, to shoot a film, you have to raise money, and it was a brutal task to raise $175,000 for this film. She’s Gotta Have It was shot in the summer of 1985 from July 1 to July 14 — two six-day weeks. And it almost killed me. … Making a successful independent film has to be one of the hardest things known to humankind.”
Spike Lee was always affected by how little of the life surrounding him was reflected realistically on the big screen, or portrayed at all, especially when it came to the Black community.
“It’s rare enough that black people are seen in films, but even when we are, it’s always in stereotypical roles of making people laugh, or as singers and dancers,” Lee said.
The film won the Award of the Youth at Cannes in 1986 and other awards, and it was the start of many films Spike Lee directed, including feature dramas, documentaries, and concert films.
In 1979, Lee and Monty Ross founded the production company 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks, sometimes shortened to 40 Acres, through which Lee has produced all of his films, starting with She’s Gotta Have It. After the success of his films Do the Right Thing and Malcolm X, Lee expanded the company by opening clothing stores.
In 2017, Lee had his film, She’s Gotta Have It, adapted as a Netflix series. The show brought the main character of Nola Darling to the 21st century, but it was canceled in 2019 due to typical streaming metrics and viewership costs. His latest work was the 2025 crime thriller Highest 2 Lowest.
