This day in history: Happy birthday, Patrick Stewart!

Patrick Stewart, born in 1940, West Yorkshire, England. While his father served in the British Army, Stewart and his brothers were raised by their mother in a poor, working-class family during World War II.

In an interview, Stewart described his life growing up and how his father’s military experiences affected his mental well-being.  “There was no hot water. There was no kitchen. There was no toilet. The only toilet was out around the corner of the house, in this yard I spoke of. Where there were four toilets, each one belonging to four houses in the yard. So in the winter, when you had to go to the bathroom, you needed to dress for it. Put on clothes. I mean, I kept a woolen cap behind the door, which I would put on my head. It also became my reading room because very early on, I was passionate about books and novels. They were my form of escapism.” he said.

At around age 12, an English teacher introduced him to Shakespeare and cast him in a school play.  He left school at age 15 and worked as a reporter, but it didn’t take him long to know he wants to choose acting over journalism, so he joined the Royal Shakespeare Company where he performed in many Shakespearean plays.

Stewart was seen as a more serious actor, but that changed when he got the role of Captain Jean-Luc Picard, then after that the peaceful and powerful Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men movies.

During the pandemic, Stewart got encouraged to start using social media to engage with his fans sharing parts of his daily life. This all inspired his audiobook project, Patrick Stewart Performs the Complete Sonnets of William Shakespeare. He also uses his platforms to support organizations like Combat Stress for veterans suffering from PTSD.

Lately rumors spread that Avengers: Doomsday, which will come out this year in December, might be his final acting role. But Stewart put an end to these rumors in an interview with TV Insider

“That being said, I still continue to receive interesting offers and I love being challenged by new work, like voicing a pig’s head in Riz Ahmed’s brilliant new series Bait. I can’t imagine ever officially ‘retiring’. I’ll always and forever be an actor.’ Stewart said.

Happy birthday, Patrick Stewart!
