Vinyl records have experienced an incredible resurgence in recent years. While many albums remain affordable, a select group of records have become legendary among collectors. Limited production runs, withdrawn releases, and historical significance have helped drive their values to astonishing levels.
Not every valuable record is a rare jazz pressing or obscure indie release. Some come from artists whose names are known around the world. Here are 10 of the most prized vintage vinyl records that collectors continue to chase.
10. The Beatles – Yesterday and Today (Butcher Cover)
Few album covers have achieved the notoriety of the Beatles’ original “Butcher Cover.” Released in 1966, the artwork featured the band posing with raw meat and dismembered dolls, sparking controversy almost immediately.
Capitol Records quickly recalled the album and replaced the cover. As a result, surviving original copies have become some of the most sought-after Beatles collectibles.
9. David Bowie – Diamond Dogs (Uncensored Cover)
Most copies of David Bowie’s 1974 album featured an edited version of the cover artwork. Early pressings showed the lower half of Bowie’s half-dog character, which some distributors considered inappropriate.
The image was quickly altered, making the original version highly desirable among Bowie collectors. Well-preserved copies can command impressive prices.
8. The Velvet Underground & Nico – First Pressing
The Velvet Underground’s debut album initially sold poorly. However, its influence on rock music grew dramatically in the decades that followed.

One particularly famous copy, numbered 0000001 and owned by Ringo Starr, sold for $790,000 in 2015. Even less famous low-numbered copies can attract substantial bids.

Prince originally planned to release The Black Album in 1987 before abruptly pulling it from distribution shortly before launch.
Although some promotional copies had already reached distributors, most were recalled. Those surviving originals have become some of the most coveted records in Prince’s catalog.
4. The Sex Pistols – God Save the Queen (A&M Pressing)
The Sex Pistols’ relationship with A&M Records was famously short-lived. Before the label dropped the band, a small number of copies of “God Save the Queen” had already been pressed.
Most were destroyed, leaving only a handful in circulation. Today, surviving examples rank among the rarest and most valuable punk records ever produced.
3. Bob Dylan – The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan (Withdrawn Version)
An early version of Bob Dylan’s breakthrough album included four songs that were later replaced before the record reached wide release.
Only a small number of copies escaped into the public. Because of their rarity and historical significance, original withdrawn pressings remain highly prized by collectors.

Released as a one-of-a-kind album, Once Upon a Time in Shaolin broke nearly every convention of modern music distribution. Only a single copy was produced.

1. The Quarrymen – That’ll Be the Day / In Spite of All the Danger
Recorded in 1958, this rare disc predates the Beatles and features members of the group when they performed as the Quarrymen. Only a single original acetate was produced.
Because it represents one of the earliest recordings connected to the future Beatles, it holds immense historical value. Few records carry as much significance in the history of popular music.
