This day in history: Happy birthday, Clint Eastwood!

On May 31, 1930, American film legend Clinton Eastwood Jr. was born in San Francisco, California. During the Great Depression, he moved with his family multiple times before they finally settled in Piedmont, California, in 1940.

Before finding success in Hollywood, Eastwood had various jobs, served four years in the Army, and was stationed in California during the Korean War.

Following his discharge in 1953, he moved to Hollywood and started his career in a string of B-movies, until 1959 when he was cast as the cowhand Rowdy Yates in the popular TV Western series Rawhide, a role he played for eight years.

In the mid-1960s, Eastwood started his international film career in a trilogy of low-budget Italian Westerns directed by Sergio Leone, A Fistful of Dollars (1964), For a Few Dollars More (1965), and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966).

In 1971, Clint Eastwood starred as the ruthless San Francisco Police Department Inspector Dirty Harry Callahan in the iconic action-thriller Dirty Harry, directed by Don Siegel.

That same year, Eastwood made his directorial debut with the thriller Play Misty for Me. He quickly became known for his directorial style and deep character studies. Over four decades, he regularly directed, produced, and acted in his own films.

By the 1990s, Eastwood successfully stepped out of acting to become one of Hollywood’s most famous filmmakers. His 1992 revisionist Western Unforgiven won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director for Eastwood.

Eastwood won two Oscars for Million Dollar Baby (2004) at the 77th Academy Awards ceremony, which took place on February 27, 2005. He won the Best Director Best Picture as a producer alongside Albert S. Ruddy and Tom Rosenberg.

He was also nominated for Best Actor for his role in the film, though that award went to Jamie Foxx for Ray.

Eastwood directed many other projects that were inspired by true events, such as the World War II film Letters from Iwo Jima (2006) and American Sniper (2014). He also pursued passions outside of cinema, including an interest in jazz music and politics, notably serving as the mayor of Carmel, California, from 1986 to 1988.

In addition to his Academy Awards, Eastwood received two major achievement honors, the Irving G. Thalberg Award in 1995 and the American Film Institute’s Life Achievement Award in 1996. France also recognized him with the Legion of Honour, naming him a knight in 2007 and promoting him to commander in 2009.
