Why Egypt’s Saqqara pyramids still puzzle (& inspire) archaeologists

Located approximately 40 kilometers southwest of Cairo, Saqqara is one of the most important cemeteries of Memphis. Memphis was one of the most strategically important cities in ancient Egyptian history.

The name Saqqara itself is most likely derived from Sokar, the powerful ancient Egyptian god of the necropolis.

Djoser’s Step Pyramid in Saqqara is an iconic Egyptian monument that marks a crucial turning point in ancient history.

This towering structure, which is not only the very first pyramid the ancient Egyptians ever constructed but also the oldest known ancient Egyptian stone structure, revolutionized architecture and royal burials.

Its monumental scale and innovative use of stone made it a true masterpiece and a foundational moment for the civilization that would go on to build the Pyramids of Giza.

Unlike Giza, which primarily represents one dynasty, Saqqara’s sands contain tombs spanning nearly the entire Pharaonic era, right through the Ptolemaic and Roman periods. Watch a video about it here.

One of the most important Recent discoveries in Saqqara is the Serapeum of Saqqara

The site consists of subterranean chambers containing giant sarcophagi that held the mummified remains of the bulls.

Every time archaeologists find a new tomb or artifact there, it gives them fresh clues and often force them to change what they thought they knew about the timeline and abilities of ancient Egyptian civilization. It’s a place that constantly rewrites its own history.
