If you’re looking forward to this weekend’s Super Bowl halftime show, it’s understandable. The lineup is beyond impressive: Mary J. Blige, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar. It’s like a who’s who of the world’s greatest living R&B, rap and hip-hop artists, and promises to be one of the best halftime shows in the Super Bowl’s 56-year history.
But I can guarantee you it won’t be the greatest.
Even if the Santa Ana winds unleash their fury and a small earthquake simultaneously rocks SoFi Stadium in Inglewood on Sunday, the chances that these five musical talents can top the sheer drama of the halftime show of 2007 is … OK, let’s not even speculate. It’s not going to happen. No one can top Prince’s halftime performance in the pouring purple rain in Miami at Super Bowl XLI.
