The world’s largest pop-up book opens in Los Angeles
The Los Angeles Public Library is turning 100, and it is celebrating with a huge pop-up book.
The book, on display at the Richard J. Riordan Central Library, was authored by artist Daniel González, engineered by Matthew Reinhart and Ann Marshall, and fabricated at full scale by Goodnight & Co.
“Luceros y Penumbras”, which means “Starlight and Shadows,” measures 15.41 feet by 20.01 feet when opened, with pop-up designs stretching up to 11 feet high.
Guinness World Records has officially certified it as the largest pop-up book of all time.

A mystery “space object” lands in a Minnesota cornfield
On Oct. 14, deputies from the Stevens County Sheriff’s Office were called to a cornfield in Scott Township, Minnesota, and found a large metal object about 11 feet wide.
“Upon responding, deputies confirmed that a large, metallic object, approximately 11 feet in diameter, presumably a space object, was present in the cornfield,” the sheriff’s office said.
Ars Technica reported it may be part of a Chinese LandSpace Zhuque-2E rocket that launched on Sept. 14 and fell back to Earth before finishing a full orbit. The rocket’s upper stage is 11 feet wide, the same size as the object. Federal agencies are now examining it to confirm where it came from.

Over 100 dachshunds throw a Halloweenie party in Chicago
More than 100 dachshunds and their owners got together at Oz Park in Lincoln Park for a Halloweenie party.
Amanda Birch started the Chicago Doxie Club about a year ago with just a few dachshund owners. It now has more than 100 members who meet every week for walks and other events.
“I think the total mission is honestly just meeting people in a way that’s fun and good for us all, getting walks and being out in nature. And it doesn’t cost you a dime; so that’s what’s great about it,” Birch said.
The dogs aren’t the only ones making friends. Member Rachel Nimtz said, “It’s definitely been a way for our dogs to gain a community, but also for us girls and our boyfriends, fiancés, husbands, everyone. It’s created such a nice community for everybody.”

A sold-out NYC dinner series heads to Chicago
The Lineup, a dining series presented by Resy and founded by Elena Besser, is coming to Chicago this November after nine sold-out seasons in New York.
The series gives rising chefs from Michelin-starred and local favorite kitchens a chance to serve a five-course menu of their own. Each night at the Ravenswood Event Center includes two seatings and paired cocktails.
The chefs are Derek Serrano of Mi Tocaya Antojería on Nov. 5, Colin McHugh of two-Michelin-starred Oriole on Nov. 12, and Luis Diaz of Giant on Nov. 19.
“Chicago has one of the most dynamic culinary communities in the country,” Besser said. “We’re having a blast creating a platform that celebrates the cooks making this city special, while bringing diners even closer to the people behind the food.”

A stranger’s wrong turn saves a family from a house fire
A man named Casey ended up exactly where he needed to be, even though he was on the wrong road.
His GPS sent him the wrong way down Highway 114, south of Lyerly in Georgia’s Chattooga County. While driving, he saw smoke coming out of a house, and he was the only person there to help.
The home belonged to James and Larita Burke, foster parents who have cared for 500 children over the years. Eleven children and one grandchild were living there, some adopted and some in foster care.
“He was on the wrong road. His GPS put him on the wrong path. He’s never been down that path before, and he said he knew that something was bringing him down that road,” James said. “I’m so thankful that he did.”
Casey, James and James’ son got every child out safely. The fire destroyed the house and two cars, but the community quickly stepped up to help.
