25 foods perfect for a late summer hangover

Ah, hangovers — when yesterday’s “why not?” turns into today’s painful “why, oh, why?”

While there’s no magic hangover cure that will make the side effects of overindulgence disappear, there are some nutrients in certain foods that can help you survive the day after.

While you face the hangover demons and ask for forgiveness, we compiled a list of foods that might help with the pesky hangover symptoms.

1. Asparagus

When you wake up feeling a lot less sparkly than last night, asparagus is probably the last thing on your mind. But according to a 2009 study, it should be.

The amino acids and minerals in the green veggie extract may relieve alcohol hangovers and protect liver cells against toxins.

2. Eggs

Here’s a delicious and easy hangover cure. It turns out that whipping up an omelet can help you get through the day after a long night out.

Eggs are loaded with nutrients, including phosphorus, magnesium, iron, selenium, and zinc, as well as vitamin D and vitamin B1. Being a protein-powerhouse means they also help soak up that excess alcohol out of your system, and you’ll feel fuller for longer, staving off those hangover munchies.

3. Bananas

Being packed with potassium and magnesium makes banana your go-to hangover cure. Potassium helps with nausea and fatigue that usually come hand to hand with a hangover.

Bananas also contain sugar and fiber. Fiber is good for digestion, and sugar will pack you with the energy you need to start the day.

So next time you overdo with the “Happy Hour,” better get peeling.

One of the main reasons you feel the way you do when you are hungover is because your body is severely dehydrated. What might help with this is a glass of coconut water.

Coconut water is loaded with electrolytes and potassium, which can help with hydration. Being isotonic, coconut water is absorbed faster and more efficiently than other liquids.

Lean proteins like turkey or chicken are forgiving to an upset stomach. The protein can also help you get started on your day.

There is a good reason why plain white toast is always recommended for a stomach bug or upset stomach.

Bread is brimming with simple carbohydrates, which supply the body with an immediate source of energy.

The carbs also help with the low blood sugar you may feel after indulging in too many cocktails.

A study published in the journal Food & Function found that participants who sipped red ginseng tea experienced a reduction in plasma alcohol levels and hangover severity in comparison to the placebo group.

Feeling lightheaded and weak the morning after heavy drinking? – That is because alcohol is known to drain the body of the B-complex vitamins.

Salmon is loaded with both B vitamins and can help you get back up to a more comfortable level.

The omega-3-rich fish is also a good source of protein and fatty acids, and antioxidants, making it a perfect food choice to relieve inflammation and feeling puffy.

Apparently, the antidote for the hangover caused by that sweet strawberry daiquiri you had last night is sour pickle juice.

 Alcohol acts as a diuretic, increasing urine production and accelerating the loss of fluids and electrolytes.

Pickle juice contains sodium and potassium, two electrolytes that may be lost from excessive alcohol consumption. Having a glass of pickle juice could theoretically help treat and correct electrolyte imbalances, reducing hangover symptoms.

 Excess alcohol makes it difficult for the body to maintain blood sugar balance. That’s why reaching for Greek yogurt might do the trick when you feel dizzy and hungry the morning after.
