Cat family left in bird cage outside shelter, two sisters not yet adopted have something to say about that
A cat family was left in a bird cage outside a rescue shelter, and the two sisters who have not been adopted yet have quite a lot to say about that.
A bird cage is no place for a cat, and less of one for a whole family. Someone left one outside Abandoned Pet Rescue, a no-kill shelter in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with a mother cat named Godiva and her four kittens crowded inside: Hershey, Twix, Kit Kat, and M&M.
Godiva was losing weight, and the kittens were far too young to be on their own. A foster stepped in and took the whole family home, where the litter could grow up safely while Godiva recovered.
In time, each of them found a family. Godiva was adopted, and so were Hershey and M&M, one by one as they came of age. Twix and Kit Kat are the two who were not, and they are still at the shelter today.
Growing up in shelter care
In foster, the whole litter turned out playful and affectionate, and Twix and Kit Kat grew up healthy and well socialized. When they were old enough, they came back to the shelter, where they have been for a while now.
Neither one has let the wait dim her. They have grown into two very different cats, and the difference is the first thing anyone notices about them.
Twix: The outgoing explorer
Twix is the explorer. She has made it her job to climb the tallest cat tree in the room and to know what is on top of everything, and she treats each new perch as a summit worth reaching.
When there is a toy involved, she gives it her whole attention, pouncing on anything that rolls or crinkles with total focus. Then, adventure over, she comes looking for a lap.
She is the outgoing sister, the one who perks up the moment she sees someone heading her way. “Twix is a sweet, affectionate cat who thrives on human interaction,” Luna Carvajal, a staff member at the shelter, shared with LoveMeow.
That need to connect has produced one habit the staff knows well. Twix waits by the door of her room, not to slip out, but to catch whoever is passing for a round of pets. To hold the pose longer, she improvises. “She’ll stand up on her hind legs, leaning her back against the wall for balance,” Luna shared.
It is a hard thing to walk past, a cat standing upright against a wall to ask you to stay a moment longer. Whatever Twix does, she does with her whole heart.
Kit Kat: The gentle cuddle baby
Kit Kat is the quieter sister, and she makes a different first impression. She does not rush over the moment someone walks in. She hangs back, takes the room in, and comes around in her own time. “After a few minutes, she warms up and happily seeks out pets,” when LoveMeow asked Luna about her personality.
She does not always need to make the first move. Even before she comes over on her own, Kit Kat is happy to be petted while she relaxes in her cat tree, and she settles into it with obvious contentment.
Once the reserve lifts, a cuddle bug appears. Her favorite place is a lap, where she kneads a blanket with her paws and drifts off for a nap.
She is gentle company, the kind of cat who is content to keep you company while you settle in with a book or a show. Give her a few minutes to arrive, and her affection runs every bit as deep as her sister’s.
Girls are ready for their forever homes
Both girls have grown from kittens into teenagers at the shelter, and both have grown steadily more confident with the people who care for them. “Their growing trust and confidence have made them both friendly, well-socialized cats,” Luna shared.
Twix and Kit Kat are both spayed and available for adoption at Abandoned Pet Rescue, and either one would be happy to go home on her own. Twix is for someone who wants a cat underfoot and involved in everything, and Kit Kat is for someone content to let a friendship arrive on its own schedule.
They came into the world crowded into a bird cage on a shelter doorstep. Today they are two bright, affectionate teenagers, as different from each other as sisters can be, each entirely her own cat.
