This day in history: Happy heavenly birthday, Carrie Fisher!

Carrie Fisher was the daughter of movie star Debbie Reynolds and singer Eddie Fisher, born in 1956, Los Angeles, California. Fisher was an American actress and author who is perhaps best known for her role of Princess Leia in Star Wars.

Fisher’s acting career began in 1973, in the Broadway revival musical Irene. Her film debut was two years later in Shampoo.

In 1977 Fisher was cast as Princess Leia in Star Wars, which she played in other Star War franchises, Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back in 1980, then in the Return of the Jedi in 1983, The Force Awakens in 2015, and The Last Jedi, 2017. Fisher’s other films included The Blues Brothers, The Man with One Red Shoe , and Hannah and Her Sisters.

In an interview, when Fisher was asked about what attracted her to the role, she said that the character description George Lucas, Star Wars creator, gave of Princess Leia made her so interested in the role.

“Didn’t want a damsel in distress, didn’t want your stereotypical princess, you know, sort of victim, frightened, incapable of dealing with the situation without the guys. He wanted a fighter, he wanted someone who was independent, and that’s what appealed to me about that part,” she said.

In addition to acting, Fisher was an author, her first novel, Postcards from the Edge, was published in 1987. She also wrote the screenplay for the 1990 film version, which starred Meryl Streep.

”I wrote about a mother actress and a daughter actress. I’m not shocked that people think it’s about me and my mother. It’s easier for them to think I have no imagination for language, just a tape recorder with endless batteries,” she said.

Fisher also wrote Surrender the Pink and Delusions of Grandma, all inspired by her life experiences.

Throughout her life, Fisher struggled with both substance abuse and bipolar disorder. On December 27, 2016, Fisher passed away after having a heart attack, and her mother passed away the following day.

Her life and relationship with her mother were documented in the HBO documentary Bright Lights: Starring Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds that same year.
