After news of their messy divorce first broke, many wondered how Bill and Melinda Gates would continue to spend their billions. But while few wealth managers could have predicted the asset Gates would continue to invest millions into, one unlikely celebrity probably could have: Oprah.
Think you can’t afford to invest in art? Think again. Learn more at Masterworks.
Why? Since the split, Gates has continued to spend massive sums on the passions he kindled with Melinda, like adding to his approximately $127,000,000 collection of blue-chip art. And it’s a hobby he shares with, of all people, Oprah herself.
For decades Gates has collected art, not just as a hobby, but as a financial tool. One that’s paid dividends, and long been used by his fellow Forbes-listers, and worldwide superstars, to build up their own fortunes.
A Celebrity Treasure Trove: Oprah to Jay-Z
Auction records show that Gates isn’t alone in his passion for collecting; public-facing celebrities like Ellen, Oprah, and superstar couple Beyonce and Jay-Z have all amassed collections worthy of royalty and notched some spectacular returns on their investments in paint and canvas.
Ellen DeGeneres was an active player in the art world, collecting for decades. However, after her split with longtime wife Portia De Rossi, the couple sold an estimated $10 million worth of paintings and sculptures.

Oprah’s 2016 sale of a Gustav Klimt painting is probably the most well-known celebrity art flip, and for good reason; she grossed approximately $62 million after selling the piece for around $150 million to an anonymous (and wealthy) Chinese buyer.
Perhaps it’s for that reason that Jay-Z and Beyonce have long been major celebrity collectors, with a treasure trove that includes Basquiats and Hebru Brantleys, collectively estimated to be worth at least $70 million.
Learn more about how investing in art could hedge against inflation
Gates and his fellow celebrities are continuing to build their collections, and the Times reported the art market already passed its pre-pandemic levels in terms of sales earlier in 2023.
