American tourist attractions we’re skipping: Do you agree?
Some places earn their fame and keep it. Others keep the fame long after the visit stops being worth the trip.
2026 review data draws a fairly sharp line between the two.

Fisherman’s Wharf, San Francisco
14 million visitors in 2019. That’s the scale of this place. It’s also, per a 2026 tourist trap ranking, the single most complained-about destination in the entire country, and the complaint isn’t really about crowding. It’s about paying waterfront prices for what feels, according to plenty of reviewers, like a strip mall with a view.

Times Square, New York City
Ask a New Yorker where to send a first-time visitor. Times Square rarely makes the list anymore. It shows up as one of the most disappointing U.S. attractions in that same Fodor’s Tripadvisor analysis, with 2.22% of reviews unfavorable, citing crowds, poor restaurants, and scammers; it also lands in eSIM’s U.S. tourist-trap top 10, alongside Navy Pier and Graceland.

Hollywood Walk of Fame, Los Angeles
Glamour is the pitch. Gritty pavement, aggressive vendors, and a lot of tip requests are the delivery. Most complaints about walking the boulevard trace back to that mismatch.

Dole Plantation, Oahu
Fourth-worst tourist trap in the country, according to a 2026 review study. The reviews barely differ from one another: long lines, expensive souvenirs, and a pineapple farm that turns out to charge separately for the train, the maze, and the garden, three tickets for what people expected to be one stop.

Navy Pier, Chicago
Being measured against a city that has some of the best architecture and museums in the country was never going to go well for a pier. It hasn’t. Navy Pier tops the nation in visitor disappointment: 6.14% of its Tripadvisor reviews register as disappointing, per a Fodor’s analysis of Tripadvisor sentiment, the highest share of any U.S. attraction, ahead of Graceland’s 3.19% and Universal Studios Hollywood’s 2.83%.

Graceland, Memphis
The tour spaces are cramped. The waits are long. Neither is the real issue. The real issue is that anyone walking in without prior Elvis fandom rarely leaves with any. About 3.19 percent of Tripadvisor reviews land in the disappointed category, which is a lot for a National Historic Landmark.

Universal Studios Hollywood
A park selling a premium experience needs to actually deliver one. Lately: steep prices, long lines, limited ride availability, and disappointment numbers climbing to nearly 3 percent of reviews.

The bottom line
The gap between what these places used to promise and what they currently deliver has been widening for a while. Travelers just started saying so out loud. Which of these would you still fight the crowd for?
