How many of these classic horror movie villains can you guess?

How many of these classic horror movie villains can you recognize without their masks?

You know the hockey mask. You know the white mask. You know the knife-fingered glove.

But who’s under them?

Six questions follow. Each gives you a clue and four choices. Pick an answer before you read on, then score yourself at the end.

Question 1: The $1.98 mask

Clue: In 1978, a killer called “The Shape” stalked Haddonfield in a mask that cost $1.98 at a store. It started life as a Captain Kirk face, and the crew spray-painted it white.

Who wore it for most of the film?

  1. A) Tony Moran
    B) Nick Castle
    C) Dick Warlock
    D) Donald Pleasence

Answer: B, Nick Castle

Castle was a film-school friend of director John Carpenter at the University of Southern California. He was paid $25 a day. When he asked about his motivation, Carpenter told him, “just walk,” per HalloweenMovies.com.

Production designer Tommy Lee Wallace widened the eyeholes and painted the mask white. Tony Moran played the unmasked face in the final minutes, Parade reported. Donald Pleasence played the doctor.

Question 2: The first hockey mask

Clue: In 1982, a killer finally picked up the mask everyone remembers. It came from a bag of hockey gear on a 3-D movie set.

Who was the first actor to wear it?

  1. A) Ari Lehman
    B) Kane Hodder
    C) Warrington Gillette
    D) Richard Brooker
Image credit: Paramount Pictures / IMDb

Answer: D, Richard Brooker

Brooker was a former British trapeze artist who played Jason in “Friday the 13th Part III.” The mask came from the 3-D effects supervisor, Martin Jay Sadoff, a hockey fan, per the series’ history.

The rest of the cast: Ari Lehman played Jason as a boy in 1980. In “Part 2,” Gillette played him unmasked while stuntman Steve Daskewisz wore the burlap sack, Screen Rant explains. Kane Hodder played him in four films, Wikipedia notes.

Question 3: The man in the skin mask

Clue: In 1974, a chainsaw killer wore a mask of human skin. He studied English and Scandinavian studies at the University of Texas and later became a writer.

Who was he?

  1. A) R.A. Mihailoff
    B) Andrew Bryniarski
    C) Gunnar Hansen
    D) Bill Johnson
Image credit: Vortex Inc. / IMDb

Answer: C, Gunnar Hansen

Hansen was born in Reykjavík in 1947 and moved to the U.S. at five. In 1973, just after graduate school, he heard “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre” was being shot in Austin and tried out, per the AP.

He moved to Maine, wrote books, and published “Chain Saw Confidential” in 2013 about the making of the film. He once said people who met him didn’t believe he’d played Leatherface. Mihailoff, Bryniarski, and Johnson played the character in later films. Hansen died in 2015, at 68.

Question 4: The voice

Clue: Stores sold the white ghost mask before the movie. But the killer’s voice on the phone belonged to someone the cast never met.

Who provided Ghostface’s voice in the films?

  1. A) Skeet Ulrich
    B) Matthew Lillard
    C) Roger L. Jackson
    D) Wes Craven
Image credit: Wood Entertainment / IMDb

Answer: C, Roger L. Jackson

Jackson delivered every phone call live, from a separate room. Craven kept him away from the actors so their shock would be real, according to IMDb trivia. Drew Barrymore never met him.

The mask came first. Brigitte Sleiertin, a Fun World employee, designed it around 1991 or 1992. It was already on store shelves before “Scream.” Ulrich and Lillard played the teenagers wearing it, not the voice.

Question 5: The three-hour face

Clue: There’s no mask here at all. It’s makeup, built from twelve or more pieces of foam latex, and it took three to four hours to apply every morning.

Who wore Freddy Krueger’s face in the original film?

  1. A) Jackie Earle Haley
    B) Kane Hodder
    C) Doug Bradley
    D) Robert Englund
Image credit: New Line Cinema / IMDb

Answer: D, Robert Englund

Englund sat in the chair for three to four hours a day, he says on his own site. Makeup artist David Miller designed the look.

He was an unlikely choice. Wes Craven had been auditioning actors in their 60s and 70s, and Englund was more than three decades younger, Screen Rant notes. He was on a break from the TV series “V,” where he played a friendly alien. Haley played Krueger in the 2010 remake.

Question 6: The clown

Clue: In 1990, a clown terrorized the town of Derry, Maine, in a TV miniseries. The actor nearly turned down the role because of the makeup, and he appears in less than 20 of the 192 minutes.

Who played Pennywise?

  1. A) Bill Skarsgård
    B) Richard Thomas
    C) Harry Anderson
    D) Tim Curry
Image credit: Warner Bros. / IMDb

Answer: D, Tim Curry

Curry remembered the hours of makeup on “Legend” and asked for Pennywise’s makeup to be toned down, per Atom Tickets.

Skarsgård took over for the 2017 film. Curry said the new Pennywise “doesn’t have a clown face at all,” per Esquire Philippines. Thomas and Anderson played grown-up members of the Losers Club.

Your score

6 out of 6: You could run the trivia table at a horror convention.

4 to 5: You know your slashers. Brush up on the hockey mask.

2 to 3: You know the masks better than the people. That’s normal. The people usually got paid less.

0 to 1: Don’t worry about it. Nick Castle got $25 a day, and nobody recognized him either.
