A $250 million commitment to expand veterinary care services
In an effort to allow millions of pet owners to access critical veterinary care, The Dave & Cheryl Duffield Foundation has announced the “Duffield Big Bet for Pets,” a $250 million, five-year commitment to expand veterinary care for family pets across the United States by funding nonprofit community veterinary clinics, supporting research, and raising awareness.
The program launches with two initial funding opportunities: Duffield Boost Grants, which are $2.5 million divided into 250 micro-grants of $10,000 for local providers, and Expanding Access Grants, a $10 million grant for established nonprofit community clinics that are willing to reach more pets in need.
“Through Big Bet for Pets, we are investing in a future where every pet has access to the veterinary care they need and every family can care for the animals they love,” said Amy Mills, vice president of access to care at the Dave & Cheryl Duffield Foundation.

Putting ‘The Park’ back in Park Avenue
New York City has a new plan to bring Park Avenue back, adding trees, benches, and a protected bike lane.
Mayor Mamdani and the NYC Department of Transportation are updating 11 blocks of the wide street based on feedback from residents who want more green space and safer cycling.
“This final design converts underused median space into vibrant public space while incorporating a dedicated, world-class bike connection that lays the foundation for future bike network upgrades in East Midtown,” said NYC DOT Commissioner Mike Flynn.

Minnesota’s longest paved bike path is finally finished
After more than 30 years, Mesabi Trail, a paved bike trail that goes through 165 miles of Minnesota, has finally been completed, becoming one of the longest paved cycling trails in America.
The bike path stretches across the Iron Range from Grand Rapids to Ely.

A Florida restaurant owner helps their regular customer
Ron Darden, a single father of two, had a special ritual: twice a month, he would treat himself to breakfast. He would walk in to the same restaurant, order cheesy biscuits and gravy, and say, “It’s payday!”
Suddenly, Darden stopped coming in for his regular breakfast at a comfort-food restaurant in Fort Myers.
Owner Doug Miller noticed his absence and went looking for him. Turned out Darden had lost his job and was facing eviction alongside his two teenage daughters. Drawing on his own background in foster care, Miller stepped in and helped Darden by giving him an extended hotel stay and part-time work clearing tables, making deliveries, and doing other small jobs.
After 10 months, Darden earned a full-time position at the restaurant, giving him a new home, a car, and financial stability for his family.

7th Grader Donates Over 30,000 Diapers To Families In Need
Sloan, a 7-year-old girl, first visited Nourish Phoenix in Arizona with her mom to help prepare food boxes for families in the community.
After volunteering, staff gave Sloan a tour; that’s when she noticed the section where diapers are kept for families with young children was nearly empty.
Recently, 12-year-old seventh grader Sloan completed her fifth annual campaign, encouraging her community to collect a record 30,326 diapers and delivering a full U-Haul truckload to the nonprofit.
Because government assistance programs generally do not cover diaper costs, Sloan’s growing annual effort helps local families in need.

Hospital Valet Surprised With Bills Game Tickets by Grateful Cancer Patients
At Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center in Buffalo, hospital valet Jon Avery has become a source of hope for cancer patients by offering encouragement and uplifting words every day.
Among the lives he touched was breast cancer survivor Kate Fink, who said his words gave her the strength to keep going.
To express her gratitude after learning he was saving up to see his favorite football team, Fink teamed up with her coworkers at West Herr Automotive Group to surprise Avery with field passes, game tickets to a Buffalo Bills game, and an autographed Josh Allen jersey.
