A partnership to rename Nashville airport after Dolly Parton
On Aug. 28, Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee announced that his office is working with the airport to be renamed after Dolly Parton, who passed away this past week.
“At a place where Tennessee welcomes the world, it is fitting that Nashville International Airport would bear the name of our state’s favorite daughter and greet travelers with the enduring legacy of Dolly’s music, generosity, faith, and kindness.” said Gov. Lee.
The news comes after more than 169,000 fans signed an online petition to rename the airport after Parton.
“We were elated to see the press release from Tennessee Governor Bill Lee and Nashville International Airport announcing the partnership to rename BNA to Dolly Parton International Airport,” The creators of the petition published.
Not Jimothy the raccoon, but Meemers the cat!
Meemers, the adorable black cat with short spine syndrome. This rescue cat has the same condition that Jimothy is also believed to have.
Meemers is based in Bloomington, Illinois, and recently went viral; one of her videos posted Aug. 18 has received more than 41 million views as of Aug. 22.
The oldest hiker to complete the Appalachian Trail
A 91-year-old man, Dale Sanders, has become the oldest hiker to complete the Appalachian Trail.
Sanders fell 71 times while trying to complete the Appalachian Trail; one of them even led to a brief hospitalization. But nothing was able to stop him from completing the 2,193-mile trail that runs between Springer Mountain in Georgia and Mount Katahdin in Maine.
The Appalachian Trail is achieved by completing all of the trail’s sections in any order within a year, allowing for pauses.
‘Dax’ the robot
Developed by an Oregon-based robotics firm to improve city sidewalks, Dax collects data, and then this data gets forwarded to city planners to check which sidewalks are more urgently in need of repair.
So far, ‘Dax’ is in Maine, New Jersey, California, Texas, and South Carolina.
Not only that, but people, especially kids, are enjoying Dax, and many have shared their photos with this short white robot.
Olivia Rodrigo’s Daisy Chain
Olivia Rodrigo launched Daisy Chain Fields, an all-women charity and music festival in Irvine, California.
With more than 45,000 attendees, the event raised around $20 million for organizations supporting women and girls.
First Nature Library in the US Opens in Colorado
A 15-acre nature library is now open in Thornton, Colorado.
Designed as a first-of-its-kind public library experience, visitors can borrow over 650 outdoor items, including snowshoes, camping gear, wildlife cameras, and kites.
Visitors can also discover the library’s nature trail and participate in many art activities.
“The Nature Library represents the next evolution: a place where books, nature, science, and community come together to inspire curiosity and connection. We hope every visitor leaves feeling more connected to the natural world and empowered to continue exploring it long after they leave,” said Mark Fink, Executive Director of Anythink Libraries.
