The strangest objects ever pulled from the ocean
Experts estimate that we have explored less than five per cent of our underwater world, leaving 95 percent completely unobserved with many unknown species and hidden geological features
Here is a list of some of the weird and wonderful things recovered from our ocean.
1 The world’s first analog computer: The Antikythera Mechanism
A 2,000-year-old ancient Greek hand-powered device, it was discovered in a shipwreck off the Greek island of Antikythera in 1901.
Known as the world’s first analog computer, it was used for predicting astronomical positions, eclipses, and athletic games.
2 Apollo 11 engines
The five F-1 engines that powered the historic Apollo 11 Saturn V rocket launch in 1969 fell into the Atlantic Ocean about 2.5 minutes after liftoff
In an a privately funded expedition led by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, this piece was found in 2012 and recovered a year after from the Atlantic Ocean floor.
3 Baltic Sea Anomaly
While treasure hunting in the northern Baltic Sea at the center of the Gulf of Bothnia in 2011, Peter Lindberg, Dennis Åsberg and the OceanX diving team discovered an object on a sonar image, the object had unusual features.
The story attracted a lot of media attention, and people started guessing and imagining and building different stories about what that item could be.However, science found a rather more realistic explanation for the strange thing.
Samples taken from the site and provided to associate professor of geology Volker Brüchert at Stockholm University revealed that they were granites, gneisses, and sandstones, rock types you’d expect in a glacial basin like the Baltic Sea.
“Because the whole northern Baltic region is so heavily influenced by glacial thawing processes, both the feature and the rock samples are likely to have formed in connection with glacial and postglacial processes,” Brüchert told Live Science in 2012.
4 Lost Ancient City of Heracleion
Thonis-Heracleion is a lost ancient Egyptian port city located near the coast of Alexandria in Abu Qir Bay.
It sank into the Mediterranean Sea in the 8th century AD and was rediscovered in 2000 by the European Institute for Underwater Archaeology (IEASM) led by Franck Goddio.
5 The Nippo Maru’s first cargo
the Nippo Maru was a auxiliary water tanker and troop transport during WWII.
The ship carried supplies from Taiwan to Japan and back. During an attack it got hit by 500 lb bombs which caused much damaged and set her on fire, the Nippo Maru ended up at the bottom of the ocean
The ship was rediscovered in 1980. Today, it rests in Chuuk (Truk) Lagoon. However, the most impressive aspect of the Nippo Maru is a tank positioned on the main deck near hold number two. This tank is a Type 95 Ha-Go or Ke-Go, manufactured by Mitsubishi, weighing approximately seven and a half tons.
6 The Yonaguni Monument
An underwater rock structure that was discovered in the mid ‘80s near Yonaguni Island, Japan.
While some believe the it belongs to an ancient city, others argue that it was naturally created.
In addition to many straight lines, some of the rocks have carvings. Nearby other formations were found as well
Many studies note that it’s a man-made pyramid, this theory says that the structures are at least 5,000 years old and belong to a lost civilization, possibly the legendary Mu or Lemuria.
