The worst advice Gen X was told

Every generation gets a formula. Gen X got theirs delivered with a shrug. Figure it out yourself. Toughen up. Nobody’s coming to help, so don’t bother asking. A lot of that advice aged into something closer to a wound than wisdom.

Therapists working with Gen X clients now keep circling back to the same childhood messaging, decades later, still showing up in the therapy room.

Toughen up, don’t cry

Emotions got managed, not named. Not at dinner. Not when something actually hurt. One Gen Xer put it plainly: you kept going, aced the test, played the part, told yourself it was fine. It usually wasn’t.

You don’t need anyone’s help

Latchkey independence got sold as a badge of honor, not a gap. “We were completely wild and unsupervised,” one Gen Xer recalled. Figuring it out alone became the whole personality. Still is, for a lot of people now in their fifties.

A pension will take care of you

Standard advice through the ’80s and ’90s. Work hard, stay put, the company handles retirement. Pensions mostly disappeared before Gen X ever got close to collecting one. Three out of four Gen Xers now reach retirement age without a financial advisor, and plenty are only now realizing how much that gap will cost them.

Smoking a little isn’t dangerous

Cigarette ads still ran on television through the early ’70s, well into Gen X’s childhood. Smoking rates have since fallen 73 percent among adults nationally since 1965, but Gen Xers still make up the largest share of daily smokers of any living generation, a lag that traces straight back to how normal the habit felt growing up.

Get any degree and you’ll be fine

College felt like a guarantee, any major, any school, results basically assured. That assumption came with a price tag nobody warned them about: Gen X now carries a higher average student loan balance than any other generation, $38,426 on average, more than a decade after most of them finished school.

Marriage and a house by 25 means you’ve made it

The whole milestone checklist. Married, mortgaged, settled, all by your mid-twenties, or something had gone wrong. Family law researchers have since found that marrying younger correlates with a meaningfully higher risk of divorce than marrying later, which makes the checklist look less like a finish line and more like a starting gun fired too early.

The bottom line

None of this advice came from malice. It came from parents repeating what worked for them, or what they assumed had worked, without much room to question it. Gen X absorbed the message, carried it into adulthood, and is only now, decades later, starting to put it down.
