Can seniors donate blood? The truth about age limits

You reach 65 and wonder if blood banks still want your donations. The truth is that there’s no upper age limit for blood donation. Research shows that healthy older adults can donate safely and represent some of the most reliable donors.

The outdated policy that started confusion

The American Association of Blood Banks used to bar people over 65 from donating without written consent. That rule was rescinded in 1978 after studies showed older people could safely give blood. Despite being eliminated nearly 50 years ago, the myth persists.

What research actually shows

Donors over 50 are less likely to experience adverse reactions than younger donors. A large German study of 171,231 repeat donors beyond age 68 found that adverse reactions decreased with age. Donors older than 71 showed a reaction rate of just 0.16 percent compared to 0.26 percent overall.

The remarkable Dale Faughn

Dale Faughn held the Guinness World Record for the oldest regular blood donor until his passing at 98. The World War II veteran from Kentucky donated more than 36 gallons of blood in his lifetime. He showed up to his local blood center every eight weeks.

Basic requirements for donation

You must be in good general health and feeling well on donation day. Weigh at least 110 pounds to ensure your body can comfortably handle losing about a pint of blood. Have hemoglobin levels within the healthy range. Wait 56 days between whole blood donations.

Controlled conditions aren’t barriers

Controlled chronic conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure don’t disqualify you.As long as you’re well with no restrictions on daily activities, you can donate. Some states require seniors over 75 to bring doctor’s notes confirming good health.

Why senior donors matter

Older adults see donating blood as a badge of honor and a sign of aging well. They’re more likely to donate regularly and represent one of the most dedicated donor groups. Blood organizations call them their most reliable contributors. Regular donations help maintain stable blood supplies year-round.

Recovery takes slightly longer

While adverse reactions decrease with age, the time to completely recover increases slightly. This normal age-related change doesn’t prevent donation, but suggests allowing extra rest time after giving blood. Plan for more recovery time than younger donors typically need.

International evidence supports safety

A study across five countries found exclusion based solely on older age appears unwarranted. Healthy older individuals can continue to safely donate and make significant contributions past arbitrary age limits. Donors over 71 accounted for 1 to 5 percent of donations, depending on the country.

When you can’t donate

If you can’t meet health requirements, volunteer opportunities exist. Help recruit donations by calling past donors and promoting drives. Volunteer at drives by greeting and registering donors. Consider financial donations to support blood collection efforts.

Final word

No upper age limit exists for blood donation when you maintain good health. Seniors experience fewer adverse reactions than younger donors and provide more reliable donations. The 1978 elimination of age restrictions opened doors for countless donors to continue giving into their later years.
