If you ever find yourself so busy that ordering takeout seems like the only option, this roundup of healthy 30-minute meals is for you! I’ve been there (a time or two), but here’s the thing—making a healthy, from scratch meal doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming. Let’s reclaim meal time by focusing on simple, quick meals that you can make from start to finish in 30 minutes or less.

What Makes the Best 30-Minute Meals?

- Quick & Easy – As the title suggests, these meals can be prepared and ready for the table in under 30 minutes. That means they have to be simple yet flavorful so you can get dinner done without the fuss.
- Balanced – If you’re looking for complete and well-balanced meals, you’re in the right place. These healthy 30 minute meals have the proper proportion of healthy fats, fiber, protein, and carbs. In other words, it’s a complete meal (not a portion of a meal) so you don’t have to search for other accompaniments.
- Feeds a crowd – I don’t know about you, but I’m always on the search for 30-minute meals for family. Whether my family partakes or I stash away some leftovers for the week, I know I’m saving time, stress, and effort with these meals that can easily be scaled up to serve a crowd.

Tips for Making 30 Minute Meals

- Know the basics – It’s always a good idea to brush up on basic cooking techniques like how to boil chicken, brown ground beef, or cook frozen fish. And knowing how to cook quinoa, brown rice, and couscous can give you an easy side dish in minutes.
- Prep ahead – There are many kitchen tasks you can do on the weekend when you have a little more time to keep your weeknight meals effortless. Prep condiments in advance like homemade BBQ sauce, chicken marinade, or salad vinaigrette.
- Use quick-cooking proteins – Ground meats, chicken breasts, and most seafood like shrimp and fish cook quickly and well under 30 minutes. And they provide a good serving of protein. Some excellent vegetarian options are canned chickpeas and lentils.
- K.I.S.S. – I like to implement the KISS (Keep It Simple Silly) technique. Afterall, it wouldn’t be 30-minute meals if it weren’t for the simplicity of it. Stick to recipes with fewer ingredients or ones you already have on hand. The simpler the ingredients and cooking method, the faster things come together.
- Embrace shortcuts – As much as I like to make everything from scratch, I also realize real life sometimes calls for a rotisserie-chicken-from-the-store kind of night and that’s totally okay. Frozen veggies, cooked grains, or storebought chicken can be a lifesaver when you’re in a rush but still want a healthy meal.
- Focus on one-pan or sheet pan meals – These are my favorite. The entire meal is cooked on one pan or pot, which makes clean up a breeze. Plus, you can often swap out the ingredients to use what you have on hand. Less mess, less stress, and more delicious food on your dinner table.
