A recent survey by Forbes Advisor unveils that nearly 40% of dog owners have adjusted budgets to accommodate their beloved pets’ expenses. This financial aspect varies across different cities, where dog-related costs influence median household incomes, creating big considerations for dog parents.

Forbes Advisor recently conducted a survey where they evaluated 78 highly populated cities to determine the portion of household income allocated to dog-related expenses. Forbes Advisor specifically examined the percentage required for essential dog needs, such as veterinary expenses, pet insurance, and boarding for a week, alongside the expenses of doggy daycare (accounting for twice-weekly visits over 48 weeks). So, whether you’re indulging or economizing, these are the cities most challenging financially when it comes to dog ownership.

1. Winston-Salem, North Carolina


Winston-Salem takes the lead as the ultimate splurge destination for dog owners, with a perfect score of 100 out of 100. Annual expenses of $1,533 for boarding, vet care, and pet insurance, coupled with a staggering $2,784 for doggy daycare, make quite the impact. An eye-popping 2.67% of household income is allocated to boarding fees, vet expenses, and pet insurance premiums, positioning Winston-Salem at the pinnacle.

2. Greensboro, North Carolina

Not far behind is Greensboro, with a high score of 97.84. Pet owners’ budgets feel the heat as they allocate $1,546 for essentials and $2,592 for daycare. What stands out? A notable 2.67% of household income, like the number one city, is committed to these costs. Additionally, 4.48% of the median household income goes towards doggy daycare.


3. Bakersfield, California


Bakersfield secured a score of 97.19. Be prepared to spend $1,536 on onboarding, vet care, and pet insurance, and $2,688 on daycare delights. A significant 2.64% of median household income is consumed by these expenses, not to mention the substantial 4.62% dedicated to doggy daycare.

4. El Paso, Texas


El Paso comes in with a score of 95.75. Brace yourself for costs totaling $1,323 for the basics and $2,496 for pet daycare. In this city, doggy day care accounts for a noteworthy 4.89% of household income, while boarding, vet fees, and pet insurance premiums take a 2.59% share.


5. Memphis, Tennessee


Memphis scores at 94.25. Your wallet is in for a workout as you allocate $1,418 for essentials and $2,688 for those doggy daycare play sessions. A significant 4.81% of the household income contributes to the daycare fund, with an additional 2.54% vanishing for the basics of pet care.

6. New York City


The Big Apple takes a bite of dog owners’ wallets with a score of 92.95. Get ready to shell out $2,211 for boarding, vet care, and pet insurance, and a jaw-dropping $3,648 for doggy daycare. A considerable 2.62% of the median household income is devoted to the furry family member’s needs.

7. New Orleans


New Orleans has a budget-busting score of 92.82. Get ready to spend $1,382 for essentials and $2,880 for daycare to keep your pup busy. Brace yourselves, because doggy daycare claims a whopping 5.07% of the household income, waltzing its way into your budget.


8. North Las Vegas


North Las Vegas pulls no punches, boasting a score of 89.94. Your wallet will feel the burn with expenses of $1,514 for essentials and $2,880 for sizzling doggy daycare sessions all year long. Here’s what else: 2.38% of household income caters to the basics, while 4.52% goes to daycare.


9. Tucson, Arizona

Tucson has a hot score of 89.22. Your wallet will be burning as you budget $1,439 for essentials and $2,784 for your pup’s daycare fun.  Take note that a significant 4.59% of household income is invested in daycare, alongside another 2.37% dedicated to the basics of pet care.

10. Las Vegas


Last but not least, Las Vegas rolls the dice with a score of 88.83. Get ready to spend $1,508 for essentials and $2,880 for your pup to party at daycare.  And hold onto your wallets—4.52% of the household income gets whisked away by daycare, and another 2.37% goes to the basics.
