Take a look inside Greta Garbo’s surprisingly modest LA home

The adobe-style home was custom built for Garbo at the height of her success in the late 1930s, and was later completely reimagined for modern day living by lauded interior designer Nicole Sassaman.

The news comes one month after the starlet’s longtime home — a luxurious fifth-floor condo that sits directly above the East River in Manhattan — was also listed for sale.

Custom-built marvel

Custom built for the silver screen legend back in 1937, the trophy property sits high atop a hillside with stunning 180-degree views spanning from downtown Los Angeles to the ocean.

An adobe dream home

Sporting a distinct adobe-style design with flowing, curved lines, and a stucco facade, Garbo’s former L.A. home was completely reimagined in 2006 by well-known real-estate flipper, designer, and TV host Nicole Sassman.

The home’s transformation: double the size, double the windows

The silver screen star, best known for her performances in timeless movies like NinotchkaAnna Christie, and Mata Hari, was notoriously private.

‘I just want to be left alone.’

So much so that the architect’s guiding principle when envisioning her Beverly Crest abode was to fulfill Garbo’s most famous wish: “I just want to be left alone.”

Privacy over views

He incorporated towering exterior walls in the design and small windows, sacrificing the hilltop lot’s beautiful views in exchange for the elusive starlet’s much-desired privacy.

Changes to the home

But the property has since seen significant changes. The estate was reimagined in 2006 by noted designer Nicole Sassman — who also famously owned and revamped the Barbie Penthouse (and wrote a book about it).

Fixing it up

“The first time I saw the house, I couldn’t believe that it had been sitting in such a poor state for so long,” Sassman told Elle Decor. “But I immediately saw how the home could be turned into something really special if I just let its glamorous past guide the renovation.”

Doubling the estate

Sassman’s renovation project saw the former Greta Garbo estate double in size (it was initially a 2,000-square-foot home, now boasting 4,675 sq. ft. of living space) and turned the boxed-in abode into an open space masterpiece.

Greta Garbo’s house is now a vibrant, light-filled 6-bedroom abode

Today, the property that was once home to one of Hollywood’s most reclusive stars is warm and inviting, with rich woods and thoughtful stonework.

With a total of 6 bedrooms and 6 baths, the glam estate with a 90210 zip code spans 4,675 square feet. The rooms are grand in scale, with the living areas open and flowing, creating harmony with the home’s spectacular pool and abundant outdoor spaces.

‘The balcony’ of Beverly Hills

Once dubbed “the balcony” of Beverly Hills, Beverly Crest boasts the ever-desirable 90210 zip code, even though it is actually part of the city of Los Angeles. The area is known for its beautiful homes, stunning views, and privacy.

With a $12 million price tag, Greta Garbo’s house is listed with Mark Mintz of Compass.
