9 must-have travel items to stay germ-free on your next flight

Travel Items to Stay Germ-free on Your Next Flight

If you’re traveling during flu season, you’ll want to be prepared. Truthfully, I’m anything but a germaphobe. But my family has gotten sick one too many times over the past few years — most likely from air travel — so I’ve become a little more cautious.

Of course, we can’t all live in a bubble. But there are some easy ways to keep the germs away on your next flight. Here are nine travel items that can help minimize the chances of picking up something you absolutely don’t want.

Airplane Tray Cover

Keep your items not only germ-free, but organized, too, with this Airplane Tray Table Cover with Pocket Organizer.

With slots for your electronic devices, water bottle, and snacks, plus a cover for the tray table when it’s folded down, you’ll never leave anything behind — except those icky germs. And best of all, this reusable item is machine washable.

Travel Wipes

These individually packed Hand Sanitizing Travel Wipes are incredibly easy to throw into your carry-on bag — or even in your back pocket — to keep your hands clean.

Yes, using soap and water is better. But in a pinch, having these wipes on you is a great solution. Use one after you go through security, another during your flight, and then, of course, wipe away the airport filth after you leave the airport.

Surface Cleaner

Disinfect your seat, tray table, armrest, bathroom handles, and everything else with the CleanSmart To Go Disinfectant.

These 2-ounce bottles are advertised as killing 99.9% of germs, while containing no bleach or harsh fumes. Plus, they’re TSA-approved for air travel, which means they can go through the security checkpoint with you.

Flushable Wipes

If you really want to avoid touching any surface items that might have been touched by others, then individually wrapped flushable wipes are another great option to have in your bag.

And while we don’t want to get too graphic here, let’s just say that many airports and airplanes offer single-ply toilet paper. So not only will you get a germ-free experience, but it might also be a softer wipe.

Toilet Seat Cover

Another bathroom product you might thoroughly appreciate: flushable toilet seat covers. These covers serve as a barrier between you and any germs, making it safer to use public restrooms throughout the airport and on the airplane.

These covers come in a pack of 10, each sealed in a ziplock bag, so you can pee without any direct contact or having to squat.

A Mask

Yes, we’re all sick of masks at this point. But there’s something to be said for wearing a mask while traveling to keep you from getting sick. And if you’re comfortable wearing a mask, this KN95 50-pack is a great option.

Airplane Seat Cover

Yes, you might get some funny looks, but no bugs or germs will be crawling all over your body on your next flight with this disposable airplane seat cover. With many people sharing the same seat throughout the day — and not much cleaning in between — this is a great way to reduce getting sick.

This cover is one-size-fits-all, and the reviews are excellent, with 4.5 stars on average and many users noting how easy it is to use.

A Travel Blanket

If you’re traveling in business class or on an international flight, there’s a good chance you’ll be handed your own travel pillow and blanket. But did you know that many of these pillows and blankets are washed and reused?

Instead of using someone else’s pillow and blanket, bring your own. The BlueHills Ultra Compact Travel Blanket is as portable as they come, and perfect for your next plane ride. The blanket has its own 4.5-by-9-inch drawstring carrying case, and weighs less than a pound. It’s incredibly soft thanks to its microfiber material, and can be thrown in the washing machine.

And a Travel Pillow

For a companion pillow, the REDCAMP Outdoor Camping Pillow is a perfect option, as it’s lightweight and comes with a removable cover, making washing a breeze. It also comes in its own storage bag.
