Rock fans: Can you guess the band from one bizarre backstage story?

Some stories get more famous than the songs that made the band a household name in the first place. Five of those stories are below, stripped down to the strange detail everyone remembers, daring you to name the band behind each one before checking the answer.

Five backstage legends below, one band behind each. Read the clue, take a guess, then check the answer underneath.

Question 1

A rock band’s tour contract famously banned one specific color of candy backstage, and finding even one piece of it in the bowl could trigger a full inspection of the entire stage setup.

Answer 1

Van Halen. The “no brown M&Ms” clause really was buried inside a 53-page tour rider, but it wasn’t diva behavior. David Lee Roth explained it as a safety check: Van Halen ran nine 18-wheelers of equipment into venues built for three, and if a promoter hadn’t bothered removing the brown candy, it meant they probably hadn’t read the technical specs either; the kind of oversight that could mean a stage collapsing under real weight.

Question 2

A drummer allegedly celebrated his 21st birthday by driving a stranger’s luxury car straight into a hotel swimming pool, and to this day, people who were actually there can’t agree on whether it happened at all.

Answer 2

Keith Moon of The Who. The 1967 Holiday Inn incident in Flint, Michigan has become one of rock’s most repeated legends, complete with a food fight, a visit from the sheriff, and Moon calmly waiting for water pressure to equalize before escaping the sinking car. Bandmate Roger Daltrey remembers paying a $50,000 damage bill. Other people who were supposedly in the room that night insist none of it ever happened.

Question 3

During a co-headlining stadium tour in 1992, the frontman suffered severe burns from his own pyrotechnics mid-set, forcing the band off stage and delaying the tour for weeks while he recovered.

Answer 3

Metallica. James Hetfield walked too close to a pyrotechnic flame tower during the band’s set in Montreal, and the injury was serious enough that he couldn’t play guitar again until his arm fully healed weeks later, performing vocals only for several shows while a guitar tech filled in.

Question 4

A 1977 stadium show ended with the band’s bassist spitting directly on a fan who’d climbed onto the stage, an act of frustration that reportedly became the emotional seed for one of the band’s most famous concept albums.

Answer 4

Pink Floyd. The incident happened at Montreal’s Olympic Stadium in front of nearly 80,000 people, and Roger Waters has cited that specific moment of rage toward an overly enthusiastic audience as a direct influence on the isolation themes that would eventually become The Wall.

Question 5

Every night on tour, this performer was theatrically “executed” on stage, sometimes by guillotine, with the elaborate illusion designed and personally operated by a famous professional magician who later became better known for debunking psychics.

Answer 5

Alice Cooper. The magician was James “The Amazing Randi,” who built and refined the guillotine effect to look genuinely convincing years before Randi became one of the world’s most famous skeptics, spending decades publicly challenging psychics and faith healers to prove their powers under controlled conditions.

Final score

Five bands, five stories stranger than most of their actual song lyrics. Whichever ones you got right, none of them needed a single note of music to become legendary.
